The local Big Lots store has Legend 3D lights for $15. Also has some 2D and 3D aluminum body lights for $8 and $10 each in various colors. This store also had some neat solar recharged 6 LED lights that feel boxy and could melt in the sun but the lights are quite decent (no flickering LED's yet). Those were about $7 if I recall.
The D cell lights have good mod potential. As Big Lots is a distressed and overstock store chain you might have to scrounge several to check stocks.
They currently have a large eyeball with a 2AA light inside for Halloween. Hangs on a lanyard and there is ample room inside for a mad scientist to stuff some kind of electronic whizbang inside. Those are a whopping $0.99.
