Is it ok to use a non-protected R123 like the ones AW is selling (MP-CR123A)? Will the Arc4 overdischarge these or does the Arc4 kick off after dropping below a specific voltage? What about on a very low level (level 16, etc)?

I'm debating wether or not to get protected or unprotected rechargeable cells for my Arc4

Yes, they should be ok. The Arc4 was designed with unprotected cells in mind. Once it detects a lithium ion chemistry, it will load a cutoff and fall back scheme that will protect the cell from low voltage. It should not drain the cell below 3volts.

Might be good to add that you have to insert them fully charged. If the cell voltage is too low, for example in a nearly depleted cell, the arc4 will not recognize it. It will assume there is a primary cell in it, and will drain it completely. So don't unscrew the tube unless you really want to change the cell.
