Raggie,

To help take your mind off your troubles, find the answer to this one :grin2:.

What is the only non-human species currently known to spontaneously make tools out of materials it does not encounter in the wild.

...in the wild? In other words, this is an animal that walks into a True Value?
Please clarify!

Close. Say a creature finds a piece of straight wire and forms it into a hook to obtain food that would be otherwise inaccessable.

Ive seen monkeys use twigs to get bugs out of trees.
Beavers use rocks to break open oysters, and maybe nuts.

now, theres a difference though,
theres tools, and then the ones that MODIFY something to MAKE it into a tool.

Holy crow, this one's gonna be tough. My guess, well, it's got to be some kind of two legged type. Am I getting "warm"?

I'd say you were more than warm. Let go a little longer before you give them the answer.

I read that story, IIRC the color of the animal is black. Not saying the answer since this is a riddle for Raggie.

BTW I did not read the thread before posting the answer I see more clues.
I cheated to get the answer using a litle known feature on google to post the search as a question with a ?.
Google came up with this reply to the question:
What is the only non-human species currently known to spontaneously make tools out of materials it does not encounter in the wild?

A link to the answer here:
http://tinyurl.com/e4pw3

After seeing this page I do remember seeing video of this in the past but I was unable to put it together with the queston.
Oh the wonders of the internet.

That is cool, I did not know the answer, but am not surprised. I study, read about and photograph the American Crow all the time. It would stun many people to know we have such an intelligent animal right under our noses.
