Having white LEDs in mine, and using blue ones in the store has me wondering about the various colors and their purposes, strong and weak points.
White: Best color rendition. Not as energy efficient, and possibly harder on the eyes at night.
Red: Won't spook game and tradional night vision preservation color. More energy effcient.
Blue: I have no clue, except maybe it looks cool? Should be less energy efficient as are white. Probably splitting hairs on the energy thing for most applications. Maybe blood trails in hunting?
Green: Might look brightest, since we see that wavelength best. Better on energy than white or blue, and combined with sensitivity to of the human eye could the most efficient. Touted in some places as better than red for night vision preservation.
Yellow-Green: Many similar attributes to green, except easier on the eyes than green? This seems to be the one the military uses most (well, also infrared) and it might parallel the trend to use yellow-green phosphor in night vision, which was supposed to reduce eye fatigue. Maybe it's just easier if using that color night vision to turn the same color soft light on in situations?
All this doesn't take into account personal preference, but I've wondered. I've never heard of a UV version (other than possible mods) but imagine it might be useful for finding scorpions and the like. Maybe leaks or forensics or something, but probably would not be bright enough for forensics.
I'm not trying to state any of this as fact, it's really more questions and wanting to know what others think/know.
