I came across these 5mm LED diffusers and bought a few.

Don't let the pics fool you, the brightness without the diffuser is definately brighter but dosen't look it because the hotspot is blown out.
Exposure was set manually at the same aperture and shutter speed.

They are made from a soft rubber-like material, and will probably tear after some time on an exposed keychain LED.

Dunno maybe someone has been looking for something like this...

These would be GREAT for my homemade LED lanterns.

Where did you get them and how much?

I use sandpaper on mine. Works great for headlights.

wwglen,

I found these in Akihabara in Tokyo, 40 yen (35 cents) a piece.

PM me your address and I'll send you 2 by ordinary air mail.

If one were to cut one of these to length for an ArcAAA it could smooth out the "blue beam" and be totally reversable! The led is recessed in the head so the cap is protected.

Simple solutions,
1) sand top of led(s) with sandpaper / matchbox / nail file !!
2) paint led(s) with flourescent paint, easy to find in dark too..

got mine today from nekomane....
(less than 1 week from Japan to Arizona!)

works awesome - and completely reversable/reusable :)

sorry, but sanding the LED does not compare to this...

I upgraded one of the keychain freebies i gave my brother with a Nichia CS - who's the genius that decided to put little nubs on the wires? - and stuck one of these diffusers on it and was promptly impressed with how well it lights up a dark room, let alone a small area. You'll still want to point it in the general direction of what you're looking at, but you certainly don't *have* to.

Not wishing to dampen this thread but wouldn't covering the LED's with silcone or rubber reduce their life span?

I've heard reports that 5mm Leds are susceptible to heat damage if covered and inadequately heat sinked. Whilst it may not be a problem in the short span it might prove costly later on.

Personally I'd have stuck with the Scotch Tape or by sanding the LEDs rather than trap heat in them.
