I've got 2 "D" cells (no Maglite) units I'd like to bring into the 21st century, whose making come good LED drops for this application?

I'd look into getting an EverLED drop-in.

With a 2D, there are also some mods that you can do; check the Homemade section for info on those.

Hi
I've just put a TerraLUX ministar 2 TLE5 (Lambertian) with the PR base (BA1) in a 2D mag, focuses very well and of course you can swap it out at a later stage into a mini mag or use it with the PR base in somthing else. got mine from led_replacement (http://www.led-replacement.com/ba1-tle5.html) not sure how this compares in price to the everled, but at least it gives you the option of using it in the mini mag if you wish, and it works very well in there as well!, If you go down this route you need to get the new version as the old one is a side emitter and is difficult to focus and has lots of artifacts

I've also used the maxstar2 (old ver) and this gives a very good flood but is not focusable in the same way, link here to the new version (http://www.led-replacement.com/tle-6n.html) the old version has lots of artifacts which I sorted with an LDF UCL lens from flashlight lens, I'm not sure if the new version is better.

Thanks fellas! I've heard stories about those side-emmiters, I don't know how much of the beam well makes it to the outside world. I'll besure to stay away from those.

The everled also comes in a lamberton high dome version.

Other 2 cell drop ins I have used:

Tectite LPR-2
http://www.led-replacement.com/lpr-2.html
Side emitter. Beam pattern very dependant on reflector.

TerraLUX QuadStar
http://www.pocketlights.com/terralux_quadstar.asp
Very bright for 4x3mm LEDs. Slightly splotchy flood.

Superbrightled PR2-W1-WVR
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=LIGHTS&cart_id=4197839.24318
Works well with small reflectors. Wide reflectors generate a corona brighter than the central hotspot.

Sino Union Night Pearl
Dim by today's standards.

TerraLUX BA-1
http://www.led-replacement.com/ba-1.html
PR Type adapter for most of the minimag drop ins. If you do not have a focussing reflector the LED is too close to the flange (DONUT instead of spot). I used an MJLED cutting the leads to suit. The Opelac will probably not work since there is no room for them feet.

The problem is you could buy a brand new Streamlight Propoly Lux 4AA for less than most of those drop ins. The Quadstar is cheaper, but only produces 16 lumens.

I agree, and given that chiphead's original post indicated the hosts were not maglites, your suggestion may be a better option. I've upgraded all the family maglites over the last year or so, and there are definatly cheaper ways of converting to LED!, but its a bit more fun to put some life back into some old stuff.

The Superbrightled PR2-W1-WVR is only $5. Probably the most cost effective way to rejuvenate old lights. Compared to my other lights of known brightness I guess about 12 lumens.

The Everled is $40 (sale $38 at LEDsupply for october). This is too pricy when very good luxeon lights can be had for around $30 such as a Streamlight 4AA propolymer luxeon for general use or a Fenix L1 (non premium) for EDC. And if not absolutely fussy about having a luxeon a nightbuster aqualed 20 lumens $15 from glowbug to the new reverse battery Xnova 8LED 13 lumens $6 at lighthound amongst many many more low cost LED lights are available.
