Are you wanting the actual BEAM to be visable?

Or are you just wanting to take some beamshots like we do here?

To make the beam showup, you want a long exposure, 6 seconds or more.
Some fog would help also ;)

If you are talking our normal beamshots,,,
then set the camera on a Manual setting.
The shutter speed is the main thing here, you will need to adjust it to the lights you are using.
You want to use the SAME exact settings for each shot you take that day, that way its fair to compare them to each other.

Typically, I set my cam to about 100 ISO, and about 2.8 to 4.0 F Stop (apature)
Then I adjust the shutter speed till it looks good.
Try not to make it tooooo bright, you will over expose the shot,
and you will not be able to see the beam details. (hotspot, corona, spill, etc)

Hope that helps.

The most important thing is to use a tripod, otherwise the pics get blurry.
with a digital camera you can try what settings work best, be sure to get no "washed out" spots in the center.

Settings are very different for different distances and lights.
( and air humidity if you want the beam to show up.)

The pic in my avatar was taken with ISO 200 F2.8 and 6 seconds exposure and
comes very close to the actual view.

As mentioned earlier, a tripod is Very Very Important. I have tried both a monopod and a tripod, nothing beats a tripod.

I also use P mode on the Canon to do it, just point, aim, and let the camera do the work.

If im not mistaken, the Ixus 500 is an auto exposure camera with no user selectable aperture or shutterspeed. "Manual" setting only allows you to change ISO and a few other settings like White Balance, Exposure Compensation, etc.

I have the SD400 and it allows me to choose a 1-15 second shutter speed.
You need to first slect the long shutter mode. This feature is also available in the S500. Hope this helps.
