I've seen the torches with 12 white LEDs and only powered by 1 x AA 1.5 volt battery. I know they use a dc-dc circuit but what? Is it just an IC? How is it done? I'm a bit new to this so any help would be great..

Try this link and click on view table.

On a side note, the LTC3490 can drive upto 17 parallel white LEDs @~20ma.

The LTC3215 has a too higher Vin (2.9v). You could get away with 2 x AA's. The LTC3490 looks good if it does drive 17 white LEDs. I guess 17 would be quite dim at 20ma so there must be a compromise somewhere. cheers
