With alkalines, a cheap 3 cell bulb works well (overdriven and bright). With NiMH, if they are low resistance a 3 cell blows after 3-5 hours, but if the NiMH are higher resistance (i.e. high capacity-2200 mAh or more) a 3 cell bulb lasts a little longer.

I dont know if they fit, or if you want to spend this much but the led drop in bulbs might be a good way of going. Ive seen many on http://www.theledlight.com/ledbulbs.html that are priced well considering its the only bulb youll have to buy for a loonnggg time, anyway just a thought

If your PT40 will get a good amount of use (considering you're using nimh), get a 4 cell Mag bulb instead of the 3. The 3 will be brighter, but it's running a 25% voltage overdrive for sustained burns. This can be fragile in nature. Depending on how much you'll depend on this light, take this into consideration. If you do go with the 3 cell bulb, definitely have a spare on the lanyard.
