I decided to one more PentagonLight mod since the risk was much lower. I put the X3 head on the 2-cell body with my 3.7V unprotected cells in there, like the good ol' 6P/P90/recharg. setup that alot of us do - including me. To me suprise and relief, it actually works pretty good:

I haven't done any runtime test because I'm too chicken. I don't know what the current draw for the X3 lamp assembly is compared to the SF P90. As has been reported here on the forums, the P90/2 3.7V rechargeables setup gets about 30-35min runtime before the batts need to be swapped. I imagine the X3 LA has a little more draw than the P90 due to its 135 lumen output, but I could be wrong. Anyone care to hazard an educated guess?
I would LOVE to see if the Penty L3-5W LED head would run off 2 3.7V PROTECTED cells, but I am completely unwilling to even try at this point. Its one thing to risk a $16 Xenon LA, but quite another to risk a $100 LED head. I'll let someone else give THAT one a try!
