Newly Enlightened
I know that this story has been discussed here before, but I have found a much better on-line article than the one that showed up in the general press. (You all will remember the article that reported that the researcher's home-made LED put out as much light as a 60 watt incandescent bulb ... )
This article talks more about why these "new" quantum dots are different from the ones that have been known for quite a while as being capable of emitting light:

(The student who used Minwax to stick quantum dots on to a blue LED sounds a lot like a flashlight modder to me ...

It will probably be a while, but this might be where the next big thing (after the K2) comes from.
