Blinq.com is blowing through some new open box and used Grundig S450DLX Portable AM/ FM/ Shortwave Radios. As of the time of this post the new open box is selling for $ 37.79 and used for $34.19. Shipping is free and the radios have a 90 day warranty. Now that the new Eton field is shipping it could be that they just want to move out the old stock. The radio could have better reviews but for the price and depending on how you're going to use the radio it might be a good deal for some. The radio can be powered by AC or 6 D cell batteries.

Looks like a bargain. I wonder if they got the bugs out of it that Jay Allen referred to? Is this any good for DXing?

I have read several reviews and they vary from review to review. I think part of the reason for the differences is Eton's quality control and then you may have some who may not have realistic expectations. One if the best overall review of the radio is one I watched on YouTube presented by OfficialSWLchannel, this guy really liked the radio and he also went into a lot of details regarding the good and the bad. I have enjoyed several of his YouTube videos on shortwave.

It's hard to beat the price given the radio is selling for 89.00 new on Amazon and the new Eton Field is $138.20. The radio comes with a 90 day warranty and if there is a problem you don't have to pay to ship the radio back. I'm tempted but I already have a radio that uses D size batteries with a real good runtime. If you buy the radio make sure you use the LABORDAY14 special coupon code and get an additional 10 percent off.

Well, they went fast! I didn't get one but they sold the last four of them a couple days ago.

I didn't think they would last long at that price. A field type radio has broad appeal even though they may not have all the bells and whistles of some of the higher end feature rich super portables. It's hard to go wrong with forty plus hours on a set of batteries and a nice big speaker for comfortable listening. Looks like Amazon is now sold out of their original shipment of the new Eton Field but no one has posted a review yet. It will be interesting to find out what Eton really changed from the Grundig S450DLX other than the case and the display. The pricing of the new Eton Field seems a little steep at $145.56. If I were in the market for a field type radio and didn't care much about shortwave I would seriously consider paying nine dollars more and get the C. Crane CC Radio-2E.

Pulled my Superadio II off the shelf yesterday and tuned to a strong local music station. Tuned my CC EP to the same station and started comparing sound quality. The EP has a nice sound with some throbbing bass, but the Superadio had the fuller sound with nice separation of highs and lows. The five inch speaker of the EP cound not compete with the SR's 6 inch speaker + separate tweeter. I note that some reviews tout the CC 2E as having the same quality sound as the SR. Not sure how that could be.

I had one in the late 80's.
Was my go to backyard & garage radio - I lived near the bottom of a wooded valley, reception was amazingly strong and clear.
Mom had a garage sale while I was away, sold my SR right off the hook on the wall :( it was plugged into the outlet when I left.
AND my entire childhood baseball & football card collections.

I also had this on my garage wall.

I'm on the hunt now for a new SR. (since you guys have jogged my memory)
I'd rather search someone else's garage  then go to ebay ...

The CC2E uses tuned audio that's tailored for that specific speaker and case, the design has basically been "maxed out" by a sound engineer.

So this should be a very good AM radio once built?

Yes, that big ferrite antenna is what you'd expect to see inside a serious ~$100 DX portable.

I also had this on my garage wall.

Those old pocket portables are handsome, but know that unlike the SuperRadios, they're completely superseded by modern designs. Reception and battery life on those old small models are dismal by current standards.

Blinq.com is again selling the G5 Global Traveler for $45.59 with a 90 day warranty and free returns if there is an issue. I have had no problems with the G5 I purchased and the radio compares very well against the Tecsun 880. The speaker on the 880 sounds better if you are an arm chair listener but if you are into Dxing or listening to SSB then the G5 has an edge when comparing between the two radios I have. To be fair the 880 I have has an earlier version of the 8820 firmware so it hard to say if SSB performance is better with the newer firmware.

Darn it! Now they have one less! I couldn't help myself. :) I put in WELCOMEBACK coupon code for a 10% discount and the total was $34.01. At that price I think it's a steal. I'm really not into shortwave and for only $34.01, it'll be fun to check out.

Is the NGS450 better than the Radioshack 20-629? The prices are comparable at the moment. The RS unit I know has only 9presets per band, which is a bother on a digital radio. The Grundig has 10. Which has better sound and reception?

I follow this thread all the time. Good stuff. Any suggestion for a larger portable, where FM sound quality would be high? I'm looking for a yard work and garage beater, so I'd like good value. I've been using an old Radio Shack Superradio clone, but it finally bit the dust.

I like StarHalo's suggestion but if you are looking for something more in line with what you had and depending on budget the C Crane CCRadio-2E would come close when compared to the GE Super Radio but the radio is not cheap and is priced at $159.00 on Amazon. A radio I would like to have and if you are only considering new you might also look at the Tecsun BCL- 3000, Anon-co has the radio listed on EBay for about $95.00 shipped. The Tecsun BCL-3000 is basically the Grundig/Eton S350DL with Tecsun name. You don't have to go big as far as the radio is concerned if you are only interested in a big sound. There are some small radios with passive radiator speaker which will surprise you when it comes to filling a room with deep rich sound.
