Yes do this. Pick an L2 that looks good to you. L2P for more scratch resistance.
I am also an aircraft mechanic, love my L2's. At night they are great for doing a walk around.
The light's driver is regulating the output. Current draw on a 14500 is about .6A on high, and about triple that with a lithium or NiMH AA. Alkaline has a hard time giving up 2 amps.
I read a few threads from a while back about Titanium CR123 self discharging over the course of a few years, far faster than other CR123 batteries.
Is this still the case? I have seen them do well in the shoot outs, but if they can't store I'd rather not buy them. They are pretty cheap.....
Don't be stupid with Li-Ion's and you should be fine. Use a charger that does not overcharge, and monitor your cells.
For multicell lights it's a good idea to use protected batteries.
I have a two cell light that I use 2x NCR18650 unprotected batteries in. They get charged as a pair and I...
I don't have many NW led's, but I do have an XML2 T6 3C, and an XML T6 4C.
The XML2 3C has more yellow than the XML 4C, and the 4C appears to have more red.
And the XML2 is a good bit brighter.

Yeah my cheap DMM only measures about 2.6 Amps as well, its def the leads.

Awesome.
Did you post somewhere what the sweet spot is for drive current on the XML2?
I think you had mentioned that the XML U3's would take more current than the XML2, was that right?

Do you intend on getting the H/M/L drivers you mentioned earlier?
I am interested in getting an XML2 as bright as you can make it, but I need a low that is a decent low, not the lowlow that the current driver...
