Experience with series capacitors and hub dynamos?

I will admit, even in this niche of the internet, it's not a specific application I've seen much (any) activity on. There's a chap on here who uses voltages and frequency waveforms to switch in another pair of LEDs at speed = x, but the analogue version with a single LED, while theoretically...

Looking for for budget tools and supply's to wire dynamo light set ups.

I'm of the opinion that provided the elctrons get round and you don't have to be repairing it every week, job's done. My aesthetic probably would outrage the public decency if they took the time to inspect my work, but it's never come apart in years and thousands of miles. Solder the ends of...

Magnetic operated bicycle lights help please!!

The best kind of bike generator is a hub dynamo, and the cheapest seems to be the Shimano DN3n20 or 3n30 (I have 2 of the latter). Plenty of second hand or old stock on ebay going for not much more than 25GBP each. However, then you need rims, spokes, someone to build it and tyres and so on. So...

Standlight circuits (Will this circuit work?)

Sorry old chap, not a simulation expert. I've spent limited time with MATLAB and didn't enjoy that a great deal either.

Standlight circuits (Will this circuit work?)

Steve, that's some excellent work you've done out of the goodness of your own heart. Would it make a difference to insert the zeners inherent in the front LED? Them being there was the only reason I inserted the Shottky.

Standlight circuits (Will this circuit work?)

Happy; so ditch R1, the LDO, the zener and replace SD1 with a normal diode to get the voltage down to something that won't hurt the supercaps?

Standlight circuits (Will this circuit work?)

Just got the frameset, building up components now. Shimano 3N30 built up now at the back, and Sturmey Archer 8-sp at the front on order. Pedals arrived today for the 33T chainset. Not yet ready to ride. The front schematic is merely a proposition, so content to change whatever. Proviso that the...

Standlight circuits (Will this circuit work?)

Yes to the schematic, but it's almost easier to describe (that's also the front light version). Bridge rectifier, zener clamp, 5.5v supercap, LDO, resistor, LED(s). The Lucas 525 now has 11 x 8mm red LEDs which got me to 0.5W, and there's a copy with single LED in the mudguard light. The single...

Standlight circuits (Will this circuit work?)

Thanks Steve. Whether I use a resistor or not kind of depends on whether the rear lights suffer from having all the power taken by the front. When I ran a commercial halogen front in parallel with a home-built LED one, it was very noticeable how much more light I got when the halogen was...

Standlight circuits (Will this circuit work?)

It is a pretty unique LED, but appears to be the latest and greatest in Busch & Muller front lights, hence I'm pretty interested in it. The 2 tail-lights use my (not) patented LDO solution with their own bridge rectifiers. This way if anything stops or rattles out of place, I only lose 1...

Standlight circuits (Will this circuit work?)

Because that's what the datasheet says on page 13. So it's not like I can get rid of them. Would agree completely, but the prototypes of the ones on the current bikes never lasted. It was only when I added the LDOs that I got decent run-time. However in this case you're probably right and I'm...

Standlight circuits (Will this circuit work?)

Having had the latest and greatest B&M headlight identified by deNaranja in this thread, I've found it at RS and dug into the data-sheet. It appears to have the LEDs in series, each with a Zener to protect it. So using the principles of this thread, and my own standlight circuit (which no one...

    "Flashlight Etiquette" for Cyclists

I agree with this chap: http://mccraw.co.uk/blinding-lights-reduce-road-safety/ Shortened version; if your lights are obnoxious enough to distract and / or provoke a bad reaction, you're not helping.

    new B&M headlight...

Have we established what family or specific LEDs they're using for the main one? Quite content the SMD standlights are routine stuff.

    New Power Source

The Siva Atom. http://sivacycle.com Weighing in at only 300 grams, an email to the creators reveals that you don't get access to the raw ac output, but you can get up to 5W, from 5V dc at 1000mA. That's getting two thirds again what I can get from a near 1kg 3W hub dynamo. They reckon 10mph for...
