    How to bake a P7

If you're not reflow soldering, there's really no good reason to bake the chip. The point of baking is that as a part sits in the air, it soaks up a small bit of moisture from the atmosphere. At reflow temperatures, the water vapor expands and damages the chip. The recommendation of the...

Alternative to heatsink compound for cheapskates... Vote!

They're talking about molybdenum in a steel alloy. I wouldn't worry about the content of what you're using, just use something that will stay put when it heats up, and won't break down over time. Just remember- the principle purpose of thermal compound is to fill the gaps between the heat sink...

    mag 3D runs at 6volts....

Where did you get the bulb? If it came with the 3D, they were probably counting on 4.5 volts. If you bought the bulb separately, then the original packaging ought to say what the intended use is.

    DIY Handpower LED Crank Light

I did my first test tonight, using my Makita 14.4v to drive the old broken drill. I had to take it all the way up to full speed in second gear to reach 12.5 volts. Here's my setup so far: The Makita has a no-load speed of 1300 RPMs, and it didn't get slowed down much by the load of the...

    mag 3D runs at 6volts....

What's the bulb rated for? If it's rated for 6 volts, you should be fine. Also, I don't know mag lites so I'm not sure if a D lamp works in a C light, but I've seen someone else put a 5D lamp in a smaller light that he was powering with lithium cells.

    DIY Handpower LED Crank Light

A little googling yielded this. Apparently someone out there has already managed to get 5.7 watts out of a cordless drill. I think that by using a pulley and a stout pull-cable, you could get more RPMs out of it, and thus more watts. Just a guess, but I think you could double that to 10 watts...

    DIY Handpower LED Crank Light

Daekar- It's neat that you work there, I actually looked at your company's website before while sourcing motors for my last job. A gear-motor seems like the only way to go for this project. It's the only way to get a few stages of high-quality high-reliability gears without breaking the bank...

    DIY Handpower LED Crank Light

Ok, so we have- 1) Durable. Saving on batteries is pointless if the light breaks. 2) Ergonomic power input. Allows forceful use of large skeletal muscles to allow significant power input into the light. 3) Long useful charge life. We don't want to walk around cranking. 4) Switchable levels...

    DIY Handpower LED Crank Light

Hi All, I'm still quite new to CPF, so I appreciate your patience with my obvious questions. I've recently decided that I'm interested in designing and building my own flashlight. My original intention was to locate the most state of the art LED I could find, and mate it with one or more 18650...

George, Thanks for the link. Also, if you're the one who moved the thread to a more relevant forum, thanks for that too.

    LEDEngin, starting my first flashlight

Sure, I'd be glad to keep everyone updated. I've been climbing up the learning curve on the flashlight scene for the last few days. I had no idea it was such a big thing! I used to spend most of my time at http://htguide.com/forum/forumdisplay.php4?f=6 and http://diyaudio.com. For a long time...

    LEDEngin, starting my first flashlight

Gunner, Thanks for the welcome. I must look like such a n00b! The Mouser part number is 897-LZ005003W1G1. Hopefully this link will work better: http://www.mouser.com/search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=LZ-005003W1G1virtualkey62410000virtualkey897-LZ005003W1G1 It really looks like those Cree LEDs are...

    LEDEngin, starting my first flashlight

Hey all, this is my first post. I'm looking to design and build my own flashlight as a fun project to learn Pro/E Wildfire, and I'd like to try to get as close to state-of-the-art as I can. Does anybody know if LEDEngin LEDs are actually any good? This part at Mouser claims 135 lumens at 2.7...
