Funny, I choose 2xAAA Maglite Penlight over 2xAA Maglite Pro Led. 2xAAA is a small enough, more powerful than 1xAAA but powerless enough not to get warm. They also make good EDC lights as you can just clip them in your pocket, bag like a regular pen.
Oh, and I found my Jacob A60. An XRE light with a big plastic reflector. Too much throw for a ~$14 light. Not a too quality light though.
If you're into tight budget, you can look at different C8 type offerings for cheap throw.
Eagletac has some powerful AA lights released recently. Through the reviews, with XML2 emitters, 3x and 6x AA setups, these lights were found to be brightest in the competition. Sorry, I don't remember the exact models but it is worth checking out with ET and find the reviews by Selfbuilt.
I find 1xAA lights very useful as EDC lights in city. You mostly need just a little lumens for indoors and AA can supply a 30 lumen light for hours and hours.
But still, AA format is usually too small for comfortable hand hold, put into your shoulder bag, or for those burst times you may need...
It is a decent light and I have two. The anodization outside is hard enough to withstand minor scratches but would still get damaged if dropped onto concrete, etc. The light has a very nice beam profile and two modes are quite useful in use. Only concerns are that screw on cigar grip may loosen...
Maybe a heads up, I just got my single mode 3-18v SMO XM-L2 drop in from KaiDomain. It was around $8.50 so a very inexpensive one. I must state here that with the help of adjusted SMO reflector on this drop-in and a well made focus, this is the most throwy XML dropin I've ever had. Works decent...
Solarforce dropins can work with multiple cells up to 9v in total, but Intl-outdoor's p60 dropin is limited to 4.2v or a single lithium ion cell as like all AMC7135 chip based drivers are. It more probably drives the emitter higher, though.
High CRI dropin from IntlO isn't a thrower BTW. it...
Those were the days cops eat only donuts. So, was a design for the demand :)
That hole in the middle protects you from blinding yourself in close examinations, BTW. Like a brightness setting on a single mode light.
You can get a neutral white, high CRI XML2 drop-in from Intl-Outdoor, for ~$18. The QLITE driver it uses draws 3Amps on high and can have a moonlight mode too. There is no flicker etc to bug you but you may need to add another spring to the positive pole as it is a bit short for Solarforce...
I really would like to hear your thoughts on PWM in these 9v Solarforce dropins. My T1 has a low PWM frequency on low. I'm happy with the high output mode in fact.
Although the only dropin from Solarforce I had was a 1-4.2V XPG 3 Mode I guess I can comment on how SF dropins work. 3 mode 3V dropin was unique for its price and was quite bright and clean too. The only downside with it was that it had an apparent PWM on its lower modes.
I am also thinking of...
Almost a year old post but I am looking for a 2xCR123 light that should be light and slim. Olight T20 with XP-G2 emitter cought my attention. I would also like to hear thoughts about this light from its users.
