Yup. Who remembers Maytag washing machines, and why they kept the name but changed the machine. . .

Ultralight backpacking going into winter backpacking....need suggestions.

The H501FW is fine for hiking established trails on medium beam. I have used it for XC skiing at night as well. And it is an outstanding task and reading light in camp. What it does NOT do is identify the growly noises coming from the bushes 50 yards down the trail. (For that, I carry a...

    Cold weather AA advice

Eneloops work fine in the cold, although run times are shorter than at room temp. I have used them at 15 degrees ambient to drive a headlamp for nighttime skiing. You won't have a problem unless your dog needs really long walks. . .

How much "throw" does the H501 have?

It works fine for night-time cross-country skiing. The snow, of course, adds a lot of reflection. I find I need to use high beam instead of medium on steep downhill trails where speed increases significantly.

How much "throw" does the H501 have?

I have often used my old-version H501w packing after dark on trails in rough country. Medium works fine most of the time, but I carry a Mini AA for places where I need more reach--to find the trail, or pick the best path through brush, for example. The combination works well, and is easy on...

What light for parcel delivery helper?

Obviously you do not live in Anchorage. At this time of year, no doubt the busiest for UPS, real daylight is a bit thin in some places. Actually, it seems like if you blink, you miss it. . . I agree with Glock27. Two lights. For a headlamp, Zebralight H-something-FW (pick battery of choice...

QuarkTactical Problem: Won't shift modes. Advice?

Fixed! The reprogramming did in fact solve the problem. I had tried it before the cleaning (no response), but apparently not after. It is funny how easy it is to convince yourself that the evil forces of darkness are conspiring against you, and forget to check the obvious. . . Many Thanks!

QuarkTactical Problem: Won't shift modes. Advice?

I left my Quark AA sitting (w/o a battery) for a few months and now when I use it, it comes on in high beam and will not shift modes--in fact, unscrewing the head does nothing-- except of course the head eventually comes off. I did a quick clean of the head interior and the body threads, but no...

    Flashlights for Alaska?

With no wish to discourage enthusiasm, I would like to point out that Anchorage, even in January, is usually above zero degrees. At the moment, as I write, it is plus 19, up from yesterday's unusually chilly low of 2. ( I believe the all-time record low is -35, and that was on one night in...

Quark Mini AA or Preon 1 for keychain?

I'm in agreement with those who find the Mini AA too big on a key ring. I have two Minies--they are a great light--but for a keychain I would recommend AAA. You might consider the A3-EOS.

Question: Quark AA vs Quark AA2

That is definitely right. Works great.

    Mini AA as abike light?

I pretty much agree with above. I really like the Mini on li-ions, but in Alaska heat buildup is not usually a problem. Also, I hand-hold mine, so can tell if it's getting warm. I think you would be fine in cool weather, but not so much on a warm summer's eve--ambient matters. Do the frequent...
