I don't use it loads nor for long runtimes. But the bulb has been in there for about a year so far. They are Eneloops, so 7 x 1.2v rather than 7 x 1.5v. Not sure if this would make a difference or not.
Let's forget about NOMINAL 1.5V.
Alkaline drops to 1.2V. at maximum of 1 Amp draw and NiMH also hold it's 1.2 volt at up to 4~5 Amps. So voltage under load is 1.2 volt.

I've been thinking about trying 2 x 26800 Li-ion, as that should also be 8.4v nominal voltage, only require a small spacer to make them the same length as 3 x D cell. But much higher capacity than using the Eneloops.

3 alkaleaks=1li ion
It will be fine.
Long life rated 6v bulbs rerate nicely on 2x li ion.
Which is why i grabbed a lifetime supply of the ones i linked on ebay.
Likely out of production never to be produced again

Each D cell has length of about 60mm so you have 180mm space for batteries.
2 x 26800 Li-ions have maximum voltage of 8.4 and will drop to about 7.4V volts under load.

this is second generation of magnum star, xenon, 1st generation of magnum stars are kripton. easy to tell apart, 2nd gen has this cylindrical envelope.

I can't make any guarantees without trying it myself, but I don't see why it would instaflash on first use.
Try it, you'll see what i mean, PR based flashlight krypton and xenon bulbs are different animals compared to PR base halogens. they can be overdriven, halogens instaflash.
Do not confuse them with bipin halogens, some of those can take much more volts, my 90w 12v osram bulb is overdriven with 20V, and can take around 200watts and makes 12000lm vs 1800 driven at 90watts, but it only lasts 4 hours vs 4000. that huge reserve is what allows the overdrive. PR base flashlight halogen bulbs have around 30-50 hours, so they instaflash.

Are these first generation? They say krypton.

Are these third generation then? They look newer and are labeled xenon.

Look for tungsram 58710
7.2v 0.8a halogen.
Great on 2 li ion.

i'b be very careful, fully charged at 8.4v, it could instaflash, it has 50 hour lifespan, no reserve in that filament for overdrive.
