I just got some 9v LiIon batteries and a charger. Does anyone have a ballpark figure for how long they will power a smoke detector before they need recharged?

Erring on the side of safety, I would only use fresh alkaline 9v in smoke alarms, skipping NiCd and NiMH as well. You're not going to save any money on rechargeables anyway, likely will take years to break even (but that's secondary).

Using Lithium primary 9v Energizer L522 is probably safe but have never bought one and
not priced any recently, they must be expensive.

I am using smoke detector with Lithium primary 9v and happy with.
Smoke detectors use too little current and will work for long time. So there in no point for saving on rechargeable cells.
