For a very simple AA or AAA light using a xpg2, what would be best?

2x AA/AAA
3xAA/AAA and ?? resistor?

This is a "gift" light idea, and needs to run on normal old alkalines, or maybe Energizer lithium batteries. Output is probably more important than run time.
Not smoking the led is also an issue.

Both builds I have in mind are smaller than will fit most drivers I can find, although I think I might be able to get a qlite or 105 variant into the AA version.

Thanks,
Jim

I use a resistor. You'll want one in the 10-100 Ohm range to get reasonable current. Confirm that it won't overheat on any common AAs, please. For example, I have a Mini Mag Lite with a Cree XT-E and 100-ohm resistor. About 10 lumen on fresh Alkalines, and about 6 on fresh NiMHs. Very similar output to a Mag Solitaire. 10-Ohm would give more like a fresh Minimag Incan output (~20 lumens).
