After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I think I'm going to go with the Eton Solarlink FR600. I can put 3 eneloops in it to work with the hand crank, and have a spare 4 pack of Lithium AAA's handy - 1 for my keychain Preon and the other 3 for the radio.

Did you see the CC Solar Observer? That's the current model I'd recommend; it's very similar to the Solarlink but uses a more energy efficient analog display.

Thanks for the tip. As a child of the modern age, something in my head always says Digital is better. I often find, though, then when I'm out in the middle of nowhere, an analog tuner can be much better because it allows you to tweak the tuning much more finely to pick up a faint signal.

I've just started gnashing again....

I definitely prefer digital for casual listening, but the tuning and display draw extra power, which reduces your runtime versus an analog design.
