..."Personal property used in a vaping kit".... OK, so we know that it's not a specialty medical device battery with exposed contacts in weird locations. Did the keys short the battery terminals? It seems like common sense that spare batteries would be carried in insulating plastic clamshells or something.

That poor paramedic.

I remember carrying a lose alkaleak in my pocket once that got very hot when shorted by pocket change. It was from that point on I never carried loose batteries with anything loose and metallic.
