Re: MBI: "Thing" - My newest, top secret "the product with no name"

Hi Guy! Why don't you put a couple matchbooks in with my Beta Thing-O!! Pretty please with a cherry on top!

Kinda silly asking after the fact, but how much does a matchbook cost?

Your attention to detail is remarkable. I'm in for a couple matchbooks. Would love to be in possession of such fine craftsmanship. Thank you.
Thanks ChazHam,
For a lone-wolf-mcquade kinda operation guy, I do love the details but these days I'm aiming to try and find a balance between endless scope creep (striving for the impossible), being satisfied something is good enough and being able to share some new toys with you all, sooner rather than later.

Thanks GUY, I'm really looking forward to this, perhaps you can toss a few matchbooks in with that "huge box" of MBI goodness you will be sending to my nephews! And yes let's have multiple color match sticks down the road

Hi Zandar,

It might be a small big box (lol) with tiny things but a few MatchBooks are doable too

Hi SA Condor,
lol, with pleasure.

Price for the MBI MatchBook, most likely $38~$40, the 8 matches being the most expensive part of course, magnets for each match, cover, book, bar magnets inside the book, as long as the printing is not too crazy, it ends up being about somewhere between $4~$5 per match.

If things go bananas and I end up making hundreds of them, I might be able to reduce the price a little but for now, other than getting the matchbooks printed, I'll be doing all the loving assembly and finicky work here :D

My proto matches were all hand painted and using thick card to make the box but I'm planning to make the matchbooks from some PET/PVC which is far more durable (somewhat similar to the plastic material used for folders with clear plastic sleeves inside them, perhaps just a little thinner), and I've found a very slick solution to replace the paint.

Sounds great, can I go on the list for one when there's more colour choices?

Oh, and what are the dimensions of a MatchBook?

Thanks.

PS - are you planning any larger lights, say 2x CR123A or 18650?
I'd love to see what you'd spec and design.

I think Zeus has a 18650 changeable body.

Hi lightlover,

Of course, with pleasure.

Dimensions are 3.75cm wide x 3.5cm tall x 0.4mm thick (+- 0.1mm depending on thickness of the MatchBook material).
Subject to slight change but not much. The matches are about 3cm long and 3.3mm~3.5mm diameter pending final tests.

I think Zeus has a 18650 changeable body.
 thanks Newguy2012.

I'm definitely in for the MatchBook :). As always, do make lots!

AA / 14500

Thanks jonwkng :D

Guy, I don't know how you have time to develop all these products, I can barely keep up reading the threads about them!

I guess he finds the free time when his project/part gets delayed.

In for a MatchBook with my thing!

I remember seeing a proto picture of this idea a few years ago...can't believe you got it to work!

Thanks KuanR :D

The lights work nicely, it was mostly working out an aesthetically beautiful way to keep the magnets well adhered to the matches, a way to paint them or transform them (that wouldn't chip too easily and wasn't going to get me too high, lol) so no paint needed for this rendition, and have everything look reasonably natural as a single unit.

Zeus is 18350/18650. Apollo is AA/14500.

Thanks th8tredude,

The Zeus plan is to support 18350,18650, 14500, AA
Apollo, 14500 and then AA, and possibly some other formats.

Reminds me of the led lenser/coast micro that used a br435 battery
Hi mcbrat,

I have one... I should post a comparison photo :D
The matches are significantly smaller.

Thanks - very much looking forward.
The MBI MatchBook must be a contender for "Cutest Light/s Ever".

And in the finest traditions of CPF:

Lovely And Useful!

Thanks lightlover :D

Thanks Alex, a big woohoo it is

I heard it'll eat whatever you'll feed it with.

Zeus will support AA and 18XXX formats. I guess both Gods will support AA/14500 initial release.

We'll know when he spill his secret sauce soon-ish.

Hi Newguy2012,

Pretty much that is my plan for a production version ;)
