I am no expert and someone more knowledgeable should verify this; I have heard the inefficient low modes are due to the nature of the variable output. The circuitry is not optimized for a set of particular modes. So overall, while cool, the variable control is typically less efficient for a given mode then other lights.

But that is one of the trade off's of variable output. It also never suffers from that issue of one mode being too low and the next up being too bright, which can happen espescially on lights with maybe only 2 - 4 modes.

It's more a problem with the magnetic ring, not with the variable output. My iTP C8 offers infinitely variable output but doesn't have a magnetic ring. And it runs 80h at 6lm with two AA. I think it's the same with the Thrunite Scorpion.
