How about remove the tail and bypass it with tweezers or wire?
Edit: if you could clean the spring, or open it and change another one, that will be great.

Mine arrived two weeks ago (to Europe) and works OK. It had rust too. The M-H modes look almost the same too. However it doesn't bother because I rarely use H. Will check how it works with direct contact to battery.

I've made some tests and found out that my battery is exhausted. After replacing it the difference is noticeable. By the way, with electronic switch it looks the same way as with direct link. So the reason was in battery and rust doesn't affect it. Overall, I like it and now it's my favorite AAA light.
