Status update. At some point the latch on my Yukon HL broke. I have no idea how this happened. I emailed PT and asked if they could send me a replacement clip. They told me:

I mailed it in and today a box came with a brand new, in-the-retail-packaging Yukon HL.
So two observations:
1) The latch can break. I speculate that perhaps it was left unlatched, and something got set on it and pressed the two halfs of the battery compartment together breaking the latch. In any case, best to leave latched in storage.
2) PT stands behind their warranty. It took a little while, but was easy, I wasn't hassled, and all it cost me was postage (one way).
