Yes. You are correct !
Carclo is sitting on the shoulder of black plastic base of Luxeon. Instead, 42mm lens is sitting on the MCPCB.

One more finding :
If you try a beamshot of 5W with this 42mm lens,
you will see a minimum hairy line /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/buttrock.gif projected from this 4-chip Luxeon.

Becasue this lens has ;
- a small hallow spot in the center ( Calclo has too )
- a wide hallow in overall lens profile. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif (whereas Carclo's one is flat.)

It is my first beamshot at CPF.
I runned 5 watt (UX1V) at 700mA with George's constant driver with two different mirror lens.

Beamshot was done at 3.0Miter(10ft.)against the white wall.
And put a scale sized 30cm (1ft.)

That's nice with the 5w. Sure it's square and direct image of the die, but all the light goes directly forward.

How does 50mm vs 42mm w/luxIII compare?

I made a quick host for one of these.

It certainly concentrates the light in a tight beam! With no spill, I think this optic will have some interesting applications and is likely "specialized". It is a very interesting optic, to say the least! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I also expect some interesting packaging might evolve around this and similar optics. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Uh, Lux III with a Doug S. proto driver. More info HERE.

Since I used an Aleph LE in this build, I will be able to swap out engines and see how the optic fares with other LED's and drivers. Of course I need to make more engines and probably get back to work....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Throw Lens kit ( 3W hits 240ft ) : 48USD Shipp

Great work on that light Don.

I assume that these optics are giving more throw than a reflector of the same size?
This makes a great option,,,, the head of your light is alot shorter than if it had a reflector of the same dia.

Now, are you goin to me making these an option for the Aleph? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

A red/orange in one of these would be cool. Why? Well you can't really see the beam from red light at night like you can green/blue/white beams. That's why green lasers you can see the beam through the air easier than red.

Take away the spill light, and you have a covert flashlight. People would not really be alarmed by it unless they were in direct view of the bezel. They'd just see a red spot light lighting up something, but not know where the person was!

I'm curious to see what people have built with these...

Turn ON pics.

Spec.
3W TWOL
Square heatsink included
(stage1)switch
One CR123a regulated
about 500mA

Beam throw away about 100meters.
I think Beam throw about 300meters at 1000mA /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
