I have a old surefire x300 that I modded like 10+ years ago. It's due for a make over as I was never happy with the multi function driver I used. I wanted just on and off. So now I'm back at it. What's your thoughts on direct driving a 6v XHP50.2 off 2 surefire CR123A batts in series? I don't need all the light that a xhp50 can pump out but 1000 lumens would be nice. My thought is if the cr123A is rated to around 1.5a that should put me in the 1000+ range but I'm not well versed in this subject.

It'll work and should reach your 1,000 Lumens goal. Per the spec sheet At 1.5 amps it's hitting 100% flux output, which is around 1000 Lumens.
Also per its spec sheet At 6 Volts the LED wants to use 3 amps so you'll be using those cr123 pretty quickly. I estimate 15-20 mins of runtime.

Worst case you're out a board and LED.
