Im tring to find out who makes my pointer. It looks like a standard pointer, gold with rubber button, gold end cap. The pot is on the left side of the button, unlike a leadlight that has it in the front.
I beleave it was from china and started with a "C" but cant remember the makes... any ideas? Its like 2 years old...

is it a ChangChun, or CNI, laser?
that's what the description seems to sound like.

Ah thats it the the Changchun GLP-1. Thanks... Someone was asking me how it got so powerful after a pot mod..... I may have got a freak one, or do these mod better then the Leadlight? He was getting 15-20mw. Not sure what mine is now, but it will smoke a plastic cup with black dot at 4'+ away.

That's a good question - which model DOES usually mod higher - the changchun or the leadlight? I see that WL uses the chanchun type up to about 100mW!!

Yeah, I too would be interested in learning the potential in those pointers. I really like the style of them and the nice button. Anyone know what power diode they use? I didn't see anything on the site.

IMO, the higher power is attributed to better crystal set / optics alignment, coatings, quality etc.

The LD in these <=100mW pointers is probably the same across most makers (~200mW rated), and a good xtal set can be up to 45% efficient (most are more like 20% and crappy ones with poor alignment perhaps 10%).

With a 200mW diode overdriven to ~250mW and a 40% xtal conversion, you'll see 100mW, which will burn stuff...

that's what I was thinking at first too, but I saw at the bottom of their laser pointer page that their 808nM IR pointer in the same body (GLP-I-808) has power rating of 1-400 mW, indicating to me that they use 400mW diodes, not the typical 200mW. This would make a lot of difference, if true.

Intresting.. Guess the only way we will know is if more people post there pot mod adjustments and outcomes.

So does anyone know if it is easy to get inside of these lasers to access the Pot? I just ordered one from laserglow on ebay and hope to do a little modding.

I'm not sure which units are better for modding, however the WL 55mW and higher units use 500mW pump diodes in combination with better crystals and alignment in order to get the high output. In this sence they are not modded, which is one of the nice things about them.

As for the normal CNI 5mW units I think they use the standard 200mW pump diodes just like the leadlights. They are probably both very similar in how much they can be modded too.

Thanks Athoul, I emailed the seller of this laser on ebay about the mWs of the diode and he/she replied that this laser has a 250-300mW diode. I am not sure if it is either one of the two, or if it is between the two somewhere.

Well if i ever get inside of the laser once it arrives, I will try to take pictures and post my results.

Well, I received the laser today. It was purchased on an ebay auction from laserglow. This item was shipped from Canada and took a week or less to arrive. This laser is the exact same model as the one discussed earlier in this thread.
To access the pot,all I had to do was use a small screwdriver and get under it to pull it out. After that the pot was located just to the side of the button. The pot mod was great with this laser, I estimate that I had the laser at 20mW or higher before the pot got stuck and i couldn't turn it anymore. I tried to pull the guts out from the top of the laser to get to it. The hole assembly including the driverboard is all connected to the top of the laser above the brass gold ring. I had to twist it a little bit to loosen it up. Unfortuanatly when I twisted the top, one of the wires connecting the diode to the board broke. This was a big bummer. Here are a few pics of the laser, its packaging, and the location of the pot, as well as a dot comparison from a 100mW laser and the modified lyra. Any tips as to how to get the wire connected to the diode again would be great.

well I guess that verifies the leadlights are the ones to get for modding. thanks for your follow-up.

Yeah, I am going to have to agree with you there. Better order another tombstone for the laser graveyard.
