When does the PT Quad battery level indicator red LED come on

I was using my Quad the other day on high level when it blinked three times and dropped to the next level, an indication the battery was getting low. I looked at the red battery level indicator LED and it was off. Just for kicks I left the light on. The good news is that after two days, it still emitted a small amount of light. The bad news is I don't think the red LED ever came on. Under what conditions does this LED come on?

The red l.e.d. comes on when the light is off. The light blinks when it is on to warn you to change the batteries while you're using it. This is so whether the light is on or off, you have a warning so you can change the batteries. It's best not to run alkalines down until they're completely dead. They tend to leak or expand and ruin the light.
