My local Home Depot store sells Hillman brand S shaped carabiners for $1.38. I have been using one to hold a key ring to a belt loop and it works well. The Hillman S shaped carabiners are sold in a few different colors and are located in the key ring display area of the store.
The Hillman carabiner shown below is adjacent to a more expensive Nite Ize (number 3 size) S-Biner. Besides the subtle differences in shape and thickness, there are other important differences between the two products.
The Nite Ize S-Biner is flat and the Hillman carabiner has a circular cross section. The springs on the 2 Hillman carabiners I bought are thicker and require considerably more pressure to open than the springs on the Nite Ize S-Biner. Another detail of note is that the Hillman carabiner is notched where the spring meets the frame, making it less likely that an item comes loose from the carabiner.
Each carabiner weighs 0.5 ounces.
