"The Complete Practical Machinist" from 1885 is a good read. I had my copy signed by J.R. in 1904. :D Nice explanations of various techniques and processes along with hand drawn illustrations. This book goes into detail about cutting forces during machining and will tell you for instance that if the rake of a lathe cutting tool is ground just right the tool will feed itself along the material at a consistent rate; essentially powerfeed.
