Trout your ideas and posts are VERY welcome. I'm just so gobsmacked I havn't replied:huh:.......Keep the info/beamshots and housing designs coming.....you're giving us all great inspiration. This is after all a thread on "4up MC-E" mine or yours!!

Anyway, if I get a case done soon it will be a race to the finish to get those hipFlex's installed. Hint hint George..... if you are reading:wave:.

Yep, there'll be ONE on ebay momentarily - you and Trout can go at it :) (j/k)

Should have some ready later next week and more the week after.

cheers,
george.

Hi George

I am hoping and praying and have fingers and toes crossed
that this from your Hipflex thread
, counts as an email request
As I cannot remember if I have emailed . and it is too late now

Re: hipFlex
Thanks for all that George
Sounds Ace and I am sure a lot of the techie guys will be planning
outrageous builds out there .

If there is a list for buying one to crash test please put me on it

Very nice installation. That has got to be some serious crazy light output! At least it can be dimmed :)

I assume you used the supplied thermal pad material, how do you find it? I think it's pretty magic material myself.

cheers,
george.

Thanks George I am happy you approve .
Yes I used the thermal pad it does seem strange stuff to handle when you remove the backing tape very flexible and squishes up nicely when I nipped down the m2 bolts .

The heatsink may be overkill it is solid 8mm thick with a couple of grooves for the led wires . I have not had a chance to light it up at full yet will post a few shots up when I do .

Thanks George ace bit of kit you have created ..

Excellent work Trout and i'm looking forward to your beamshots. The way you put the driver on the end is very ingenious. I can't imagine waht 16 (4x4) emitters run at 700mA are going to look like!

I presume you are also in the UK so I guess you are out right now taking some shots!

I'm hopefully going to start machining my case some time this week. Got all my Aluminium ready and a new milling bit on it's way.

Marco.

Cheers Marco Looking forward to seeing yours progress too .

here are the beamshots

This little baby has serious lumen power but I think it also has a real quality of illumination
at the lower power settings , I can see I am going to enjoy this one along side the XPE helmet light.

The pics are 6 secs f4 as normal

the Hipflex is set at 2800ma and multi mode so the 5 levels can be seen

My van is 200 metres away :D

On L4 and L5 it's so bright it's refracting off the moisture in the air!
It even looks very usable on L2.

How hot does it get when you are cycling/moving through air on L5?

I think the lumens are around (presuming you are using the 370Lm neutral LED's):

L5: 2590 Lumens
L4: 1480
L3: 814
L2: 414 (although I suspect it is slightly more than this due to the pip up in efficiency at lower drive currents -which doesn't seem to show up on cree's MC-E datasheet.)

L1: at 50mA, 12.5mA per die? 100, 200 Lumens? -Would you say it's usable for climbing speeds?

Marco.

Sorry trout, +16% on those Lumens: I missed that you are using M bin.

so

L5: 3000 Lumens.:caution:
L4: 1716
L3: 944
L2: 480
L1:??

Marco, you can bet your a$$ they`re M bin, 430-490 lumen @ 350mA
i`ll leave you to do the math lol :)
...without doubt, the brightest bicycle light on the planet!

Marco Yep they are M bin wg i think

Level 1 Is pretty dim and I would say it is an emergency long runtime mode

2 and 3 are superb with a real nice quality about them .
4 and 5 are amazing .

from my 14.4 li ion pack
at level 5 it is drawing about 2.6 amps
level 4 1.2 amps
level 3 .6 amp
level 2 . 3 amps
level 1 .07 amps

I have no idea yet on how it handles the heat as it has not had a ride yet
but I did some testing with a fan and it on the bars and it semed good.

 @ Znomit and Bluecrow

Trout, thats amazing! Whats more amazing is that it is nearly identical to my 4x XR-E headlight. Got my driver on the side too. Its only in CAD form at the mo, got a bit of deja vu, ie waiting for my cutters order!

Trout, a fantastic build and some beautiful beam shots.

I've been following this and other threads of yours for a while as I am starting a bike light build myself.

I can't seem to find the thread on optics, have you found that the cmc optics are the best???

You seem to be the only one who takes beem shots outside in the situations they are to be used, how ever uses a light to look at a white wall!!!!!

Anyway, thanks for all the tricks and tips. Keep it up.

Dan.

Thanks Dan
In my mind the beam shots should be in its natural environment

I found the CMC ss had a slightly better throw tham the Boom reflector
not much in it though

Thats a really good video. What camera did you use Trout?

If I'm not mistaken, that 6XP-E light is cutting through the MC-E 4up, so the MC-E must be relatively floody - absolutely perfect for trail riding with tight bends, drop-offs and jumps.

I guess for XC you would stick to 4up XR-E's as a main light

Agressive ride/ freeride / downhill the 4up MC-E would be perfect, even without a helmet light.

Marco.
