I might overthink this, but I’m finalizing my gear list for mountain camping and hitchhiking and I want to get it right. I’m looking for a reliable, lightweight tool, not a gadget with a complex UI or excessive output. I’ve been analyzing the specs, and I’m curious if my logic holds up.
Why I’m leaning toward the HM53R Garnet:
The "Output Gap" Issue: Looking at the HM75R SE (3800K, CRI 97), while the numbers are impressive, the floodlight jumps from 5 lm to 150 lm, which feels impractical for camp chores. The HM61R Amber’s jump (200 lm to 1800 lm) and the HM60R V2.0’s weight / bulk also feel like design choices that don't fit my "lightweight" philosophy.
The Garnet Advantage: The HM53R Garnet (4000K - 5000 K) seems to have the most "human-centric" spacing: 3 lm -> 50 lm -> 150 lm -> 400 lm -> 1200 lm. That 50 - 150 lm range is exactly my "sweet spot" for cooking and camp organization.
Red Light Versatility: I really value the multi-level red light modes (1, 10, 30 lm) on the Garnet, which seem far more useful for low-profile hammock camping than the fixed 5 lm output on the HM55R.
My questions for you guys:
TIR vs. Dual-Reflector: The HM55R (~ 4900K, CRI 95 - 98) is a strong contender. Is there any real-world benefit to its dual-reflector setup over the TIR-based Garnet for close-range tasks? While the HM55R has a nice 70 lm flood mode, I feel the Garnet's 50 lm / 150 lm steps offer better control.
UI vs. Specs: Am I oversimplifying by prioritizing UI and mode spacing over raw output / higher CRI numbers? I’m choosing the Garnet’s ergonomics over the slightly higher CRI specs of the HM55R or HM75R SE.
18350 vs. 18650: For a "rough and ready" mountain lifestyle, is the 18350 format (with a spare battery) truly sufficient, or will I regret not having the 18650 capacity of the larger units? I am comfortable managing my power budget and carrying spares.
I’m trying to avoid "over-engineered" lights like the HM75R SE or the bulkier HM60R V2.0, as I’d rather have a solid, simple tool that doesn't get in my way. While I’ve looked at other brands like Armytek or Zebralight, I’ve decided to stick with the Fenix ecosystem for the USB-C convenience, proven reliability, and the specific form factor that fits my needs.
