My DealExtreme lights seem to have sketchy power...

^^ yep, anything that says "designer" is a copy, I doubt anyone is fooled by what China sells. Still, an XML is an XML, I'm not paying ten times the amount for the joy of perfect threads and some NASA aluminium tubing, oh and a brand name... Like any product you have the people who only wear...

My DealExtreme lights seem to have sketchy power...

I could mention that all my DX XML $15 3amp@tailcap, trustfire battery lights work fine, but I doubt you'd ever get to see this post. Still, nice to have a balanced view of the world isn't it chaps :) I'm sure people fought wars for freedom of speech, shame nobody cares.

    Raising CRI with colored LED's?

You can buy 3000K fluorescent tubes, they would be a hell of a lot cheaper than getting a suitably tinted LED and way brighter too. Wouldn't daylight bulbs be a better working light ?

Building a long range IR flashlight for night hunting - questions for the wise.

I think DX do a 3watt IR drop-in for a p60, 3 watts seems to be the max that is easily available. IR behaves just like white light when it comes to optics, driving etc. You'll find it easier to get hold of an aspheric lens than a suitable deep lens.

    Tiny 40 Watt HID

Try "fire-foxes hid" I can't say more otherwise I'd get banned, Ironic that a forum for the discussion of hid's, lives in fear of discussing hid's, or most things for that matter. It's a bit expensive I think, But I doubt I could mention the price without being banned either.

    Preventing/reducing battery movement?

A redesign of current contact methods would help, big springs and leaf contacts don't react that well to shock loads. If the battery was firmly held to the tube then smaller, faster springs could be used as they wouldn't need to be sized to secure the mass of the battery, as really their...

A great old friend, and the wear it's recieved!

L What coup? You don't have to do anything for people with more integrity than $$$ to realise what goes on :) my tongue is still pink thanks. Besides nothing much has happened lately, and what does remain seems to get deleted in amusing IT disasters. You couldn't make this stuff up. On topic...

A great old friend, and the wear it's recieved!

The guy showed a picture and you still think he's lying ? Jebus :/ FYI the same happens to one of my lights, maybe the metal is softer in some lights than others.

Incoming - What do you have coming in the mail??

A plain XML led (no star) Planning on investigating how many xml's I'll need for a DIY lamp and how big a heatsink I'll need. What would be really useful is a chart of aluminium block size vs temp with a 3amp XML led as a heat source, at the moment heatsink size is part calculation, part...

    Ideas for DIY emergency strobe?

The translucent white cap from a deodorant aerosol worked for me, it was large enough to cover the head and provide a big blob of light. I only use this on a cheap torch though as I think it's more useful to place this light a few tens of metres downwind of my car, to warn oncoming traffic that...

Why Does A Flashlight Have To Look Good ?

This. I know what kind of heatsinking detail I want to see, if it was a plain tube I wouldn't buy it. Like the NextTorch products that you can program, they are really ugly and I'd never consider buying one, no matter what pointless features they crammed into it.

What did you use your flashlight for today?

It's easier navigating around my house by torchlight, than it is to wait for those new CFL bulbs to brighten up enough to see where I'm going. I can also use both hands to carry stuff, without needing one hand free to operate the lightswitches on the wall.

    3:15 AM last night

A pity, I thought this thread before it was gutted was getting interesting, The use of flashlights in a tactical sense isn't something I've heard described before, but if we can't mention the thing that DM51 doesn't want mentioned in the same paragraph as the holy/sacred bulb+battery, then I...

The best computer keyboards ever made - still

That's good to know, thanks, I've saved a few IBM keyboards from the skip because I love the clicky sound, it makes me feel like I'm doing some actual work.

A 3D Printer for the CPF community?

Heh, can you make ATM card skimming devices :D http://krebsonsecurity.com/2011/09/gang-used-3d-printers-for-atm-skimmers/ (For the literal mod, that was a joke, m'kay)

Which is your LEAST favorite UI?

I dislike any UI, If I think I'll need a torch that lasts a long time, then I'll use one with a big battery, if I want to go walking at night, I'll pick the brightest torch I have. On or Off, anything else is a stupid gimmick.

Dark Sucks: --wanted--feedback on new prototype head!

Now if I said that I'd get banned, American forums have an odd over the top reaction to me saying 'I don't like it' :( But as someone has gone before me, I'll just agree :) Workmanship is great, I like the shiny ball grooves but having two styles/materials going on looks odd. Can...

Can someone tell me what this is?

USN = U S Navy perhaps ? marine equipment doesn't rate much over here, but good luck anyway edit: some links you might find useful http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/category/militaria-weapons http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?199991-USN-Battle-Lantern-Advice...

    chepa 12v li-ion battery pack?

He doesn't list a discharge rating and I would be suspicious of someone selling random tat, it looks a little gimmicky to me. I'd prefer to buy from someone who only sells conventional Li-Po's to the hobby market. One of the 14.8v 4500mah racecar batteries would be OK I guess (at least that's...
