New runtime on the L4?

That's odd.
Usually all i hear is praise over this light.
I guess there's alays one bad apple in the bushel.

the intresting thing, i worked years ago for a gunshop, one of the first and biggest Surefire-dealers....in the early years. and I have been to the shotshow a lot......and met the surefire guys.
i also always thought...wow...top notch quality control,
nowadays i think differently.
they sort out their best batches of lights....depending to which customer
they go.
I REALLY GOT A CRAPPY ONE !
bought a U2 when they came out.... TERRIBLE DONUT AS WELL !

also i did send it back.....and they replaced it.
i think if surefire would not sell 90% of their lights to military / law enforcement....they would not be so expensive.
i paid $ 260 for my U2.....$ 260....for a flashlight.

my DX C2....25 $.....and serves me extremly well since a year.
no complaints.

BUT...I LOVE SUREFIRES WARRANTY.
i keep you guys posted when i get my L4 back.

For anyone looking to this thread for a definitive answer as to whether or not the new L4 will continue to be the "flood light" which it was, I recommend you check out Dan FO's post at the following link. He claims he played with one at Shot 2009, and says it is no longer a flooder.

Hard to tell in ambient lighting. Lots of light at SHOT. Sounds like the center spot is very overwhelming compared to the spill.

It's the idea of the center hotspot that I don't like. In situations where the L4 is truly in its element, like when looking around under the hood of a car, the spill from my E2DL is probably brighter than the spill from my L4. The problem is you can't keep your eyes off of the hotspot, and find yourself constantly moving the light around to center the hotspot on whatever you're trying to see. With the L4, the alternator is just as brightly lit as the valve cover, without moving the light. Wouldn't it have been nice if Surefire had taken the extra output of the new emitter and distributed it evenly throughout the beam?

That's easier said than done.

The original L4 gets its beam shape from the large emitter surface of the Luxeon V die, coupled with a relatively small reflector. Going to a smaller emitter is going to shrink the hotspot.

Hey guys I have the new L4. I didnt realize no one had posted anything about it yet. I will try to do some run times this week and maybe take a couple of pics for everyone.

Sorry guys i didnt get time to test the light tonight. I will get it do I promise. I was thinking that I would borrow my buddies 100 luman L4 to take side by side photos. We did compare them about a week ago and there is a difference.

Well guys I want to start by saying that I’m not a writer nor a photographer so please go easy on me. Here are my results on the new Surefire L4 120 lumen light. I am new to the flash light world and I never realized that so many people were into this. This forum gets more hits per day than the corvette forum that I’m on Lol. I started with 2 brand new Titanium innovations CR123A cells. The package says 2.0 hrs of Tactical runtime and 5.5 hrs of total runtime (measured down to 1 lumen). My observations were a noticeable decline at about 1.5 hrs and I stopped it at 6hrs 45mins before the batteries blew up LOL! I also noticed that the LED flickers as the batteries got weaker. Here are some photos that I took along the way.

Ok these pics really suck there is a difference as the hours pass even though it doesnt look like much in the pictures.

So should we expect the L4's new emitter/reflector (and beam profile) to be the same one used in the upcoming A2L and AZ2?

Basically all the new SF lights that have the 120 lumen output without the TIR optic?

Thanks for the mini review n2deep,the runtimes are impressive. The tint looks to be on the cold side,is it really that blue or is it the photos?
And do you know if this light is compatible with a 17670 cell?

Thanks again.
