I'd like to upgrade the light engine on the 301x-3. Although I don't know anything on electronics I will still be responsible for sourcing all necessary materials for the job. So, any suggestions? Apart from a fitted flupic board, what other converter board options (Downboy, Nexgen etc.) are possible?

And, how about installation? Do I just solder the wires on the board, then onto the Lux star (with whatever heatsink in between)? Kindly advise.

I have the same issue. I have a 301x-3 body and am planning on getting parts to get it working again. I don't know how all the parts will come together. I did a small bit of research and I think I'll try the downboy and a new Luxeon. (My old led got fried, along with the board.) I think for both of the parts I want, it should be around $30.

What I did find out and may help you is that the flupic can only do up to 5.5w. So, I'm not sure if it will support 2xCR123a.

I hope you find your answers, since I am also looking for them too.

I'm not sure how you plan to mount/install the new driver board, but if you're using the stock aluminum ring that separates and supports the Star from the stock driver, keep in mind that the stock driver is about 19mm diameter while dat2zip's drivers are 14mm.
Lambda sells a driver that's 17mm or so, still too small, but closer. However, I'm not sure what the max input voltage is for this driver.

H22A may still have some available in Custom BST. Perhaps you can inquire here:
Q-III Sandwich adapter

I think Viren also did some nice copper heatsinks in Custom BST as well. I can't seem to locate the thread at the moment...

Besides the flupic, i would also suggest the following:

EDIT**** you have the 2 cell version of the Q3, i diddnt relize that before writing my post. I would check to see how the flupic would handle 6 volts, i dont think it can. 2 RCR123 would fry the Flupic!!!

-IMS 20 MM reflector from photonfanatic

-Glass Lens (#7)

-Replace the led with a UXOJ from photonfanatic
https://www.candlepowerforums.com/threads/121841

And after adding the flupic, you wont believe the ouput and what this thing can do, (i suggest using Rechargables)

Hope that helps, i did this to my Q3 and i think its fairly easy.
