I have both and, as you would expect, the Maxfire's beam looks very yellow compared to the 3W LED. Obviously all incans are going to appear yellow beside an LED but the beam pattern is much better with the 3W LED even though the throw is about the same. They are both wonderful flashlights and great values but my preference is the 3W LED. It has a great hotspot with a lot of spill. In fact, it is one of my favorite LED's. Hope this was helpful.

Does anyone know if the Brinkmann 3W LED 3aaa uses a special battery carrier that you have to load the AAA cells into?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, the Brinkmann 3W uses a special 3AAA carrier. Also, even though the beam has a lot of throw, the hot spot is a bit smaller than other LEDs. Probably what make it has great throw. Overall, a great light. :)
