What limits LED output when pulsed?

Does anyone have any information on what the maximum current pulse a high power LED such as the Rebel or XR-E can take vs pulse length?

My application is a black and white camera flash so I am not too worried about the colour temperature shifting as the phosphor saturates. I need to get as much optical power as I can in to as short a time period as I can, (between 5 - 50ms).

For this length of pulse am I correct in assuming that the heat sink capability is almost irrelevant? Does anyone know what is the limiting factor in how hard I can drive these LEDs and what that limit is?
