I bought an inexpensive conversion bulb on EBay.

Put it in my 3D maglite.
Eval:
Inexpensive: $8.50 including s&b
Light:
Not great. Those LEDs are the really tiny ones.
Overall the amount of light was similar to the
original bulb, but less focused.
Efficiency:
Measured about 90ma with 3 used D-Cells.I suppose
this would give me 30 hours on fresh cells.
Tried it in a 2D flashlight, it was quite dim
(but this shows it won't quit suddenly when voltage
drops below 3V).
