I just recieved a few Io Moon cool white 35 Deg Leds so I tested one of them out and here are the results.

V = 3.12V , I = 320mA

V = 3.67V , I = 560mA

V = 4.05V , I = 760mA

V = 4.36V , I = 930mA

V = 4.58V , I = 1.05A

V = 4.85V , I = 1.20A

The PCB around the LED was cut all around except the small part where the SMD is soldered to the board for thermal dissipation ending up with approx an 8mm x 12mm board which was placed on top of a 1" diameter X 2" long chunk of aluminium using thermal grease. The heatsink only starts to get slightly warm past 600mA. The ceramic Led housing seemed to have the same temp as the heatsink therefore cutting up the board did not seem to effect thermal dissipation.
As you may see there is no light gain past 760mA, only a colour shift towards the greenish blue.

It's actually slightly brighter in reality, the photo is a bit dark.
The LED is about 8 ft away from the white cieling.
The actual colour is only slightly less blue than in the photos, which is why I am disappionted with these leds. I baught six of them and all of them have the same colour. Frankly I expected something much better from Nichia

Anyway, enjoy.

And as far as I can tell there is no way to get an optic on them at the appropriate distance to actually focus. and you cant really get them far enough into a reflector to do anything decent either.

I got a couple of the warm whites to test for general lighting and through a diffuser they aren't bad at all but for an actual beam, there will be issues that need to be resolved.

Disappointing, but not surprising. I've always associated Nichia with 3/5mm LEDs, and I always associate white 3/5mm LEDs with a color tint that's more "light blue" than white.

Thus Nichia delivers as expected.

Copied and pasted one of the links, opened it in a new browser window and it worked.
Nichia is not doin' so good on that sample.
The color reminded me of a $1.99 3x3mm 4 cell pr dropin from superbrightleds.com

James: my idea was to fit them into a small keychain light since they dont give off a lot of heat being more efficient and they are rated at a 35deg beam angle which would be good for a close range/medium flood keychain light thus eliminating the requirement for additional optics, but since the beam is so downright ugly that idea went out the window. i did try them through a diffuser and it does make them more acceptable so it looks like ill be making some nightlights now.

Idleprocess: that is true however, Nichia being the pioneers of the phosphor coating and having done it for so long ( and having made sooo much money out of it )i would expect a little investment from them and come up with something better. besides high power LED's are the way of the future, i think.

Craig:
The links don't load actual images - they're scripts for Imageshack's gallery application.

Amonra:
I was being cynical and sarcastic.

I'd really expect better from Nichia than what you got. Hopefully you just got a really bad tint bin that isn't representative of the product as a whole.

I'm not sure if I can put this into words. These LEDs are SMD - not something I associate with good external appearance or functionality. A quick glance at the Luxeon package and you can tell that precision optics really matter to the design. Look at Osram's Golden Dragon, this part, and to a lesser degree Cree's Xlamp and you get the impression that it's deisgned like another humdrum IC that's hidden away in a case somewhere - not something that's intended to be part of a highly visible component. The design speaks of the kind of economy that most component makers seach for - cutting packaging costs as a highest priority (the highest cost for many components).

I imagine that flashlights probably aren't a target market for these emitters, so my comments might not be relevant. Maybe Nichia sees these parts going into general lighting where they sit behind a diffuser, or other uses where optical performance need not be as precise as flashlights.

Feel free to correct me...

thanks rdshores. what did i do wrong regarding the pics, why didnt they show up ?

idleprocess: you may be right, i might have just lost the binning lottery SIX TIMES even though nichia doesnt seem to be binning the leds or at least leddynamics isnt. or maybe the 35 deg ones are just S***. There is a flashlight using the Nichia LED which is the LUMOS which uses the 70deg one, Craig has a review of it and also of the 70deg SMD alone which looks much better than mine.
I tought i found something which will enable the elimination of secondary optics but it just enabled the elimination of my money lol.

maybe im just negative or unlucky.
has anyone else tried these and got better results ?

Your pics didn't show up because you posted the link to page that the pic is on, not the link to the pic itself. The pic link can be found by clicking "get links" on the ImageShack page down in the lower right.
