I ran a quick (1 second) lux test using some rechargeable batteries in the Inova X5 and found it to almost double the lux measurements when using 2xR123.

Do you think its safe? If my LED life is shortened to 25% life, I don't care. I just don't want to fry the light itself. As far as I know, its unregulated so does that mean there are no circuits to fry?

There may not be circuits to fry - but you're going to fry the LEDs pretty damned fast. Driving five 5mm LEDs with 7.4V of current when they're designed for 6V at the most doesn't sound all that healthy. Plus, those LEDs will probably suck the R123's dry, since unlike the LuxIIIs or LuxVs, the minimum Vf for those LEDs are probably far, far lower than may be safe for your R123's, unless you've got good protection in them.
