2aa mini maglite.. incan version.. i think it was about 5-6lumens. and old maglite incan 3D version is about 80 lumens.. so the d10 has them both beat.
it is SUPRISING when one compares new lights to old lights. just aim them side by side!
we get blinded by light so easily.. or spoiled by it. having the best or the near best in the market has that downside.. everything dimmer looks ..hmm..weak. and once a while one needs to reasess where the "normal people" and their lights are at.. and where the flashholics are with our bright stuff.. the difference is dramatic.
(and my r2 version of d10 is a very nice neutral tint ..my 3rd best tint. 1. dereelight c2h with warm tint 5a tint. 2. Lmini-2 5c tint. and 3rd best is the d10.)
the multi led lights are blue and pure white tint.. those lights seem bright when looked at, but somehow they wash out depth and colors so they seem not to go far.
modern high end led.. well look into it and see green, orange and black dots for a while and just hope your eyesight will come back. they are totally different animals!
i personally needed to choose a xmas present for myself last year and then i decided that i might look for new pocket light. i had carried uk 4aa incan for 8-10 years and was happy with it. and then, i found cpf and flashlights and ordered my fenix tk11, after it arrived.. i havent looked back since! these flashlight things are addicting!

i would suggest you to go thru "selfbuilt" 1xAA Round-up Review and 2xAA review too.. (use search)
it is wealth of information of the popular aa lights. main features are there easily found and rather objectively summarized.
about d10. i use mine but i have to say that the ramping up feature is mostly only used to amuse myself or show of others. i basically use it on lowest and on highest only. (well i do ramp up to almost to full)
so basically to me it is a smooth working, silent (no whining or hissing of the circuit) 2 mode light that has good runtime and really lowlow. and it workswith common AA batteries (i use a lion 14500 in it mostly or rechargable nihms as backups.. but i know i can find and buy alkaline batteries everywhere i go).
to have a "better" infinite adjusted light i would suggest looking at ITP lights. c7 (1aa) or c8 (2aa). they start ramping up or down when you slightly loosen the head. and you lock the output by tightening it. the ramping is smoother and more steady, you have time to choose the output. d10 is slightly too fast for me. on itp the led tint is brighter white than in d10.
i use my itp c8t alot at home. more than i realised actually. (i noticed missing it all the time when i gave it to my sister as loaner when she went for a trip over the weekend) i tend to take it when going outside to take the trash etc.. long and slender but still nice grip feel. (so i ordered the c7 body tube for it)
and the itp is smart too.. c7 and c8 and c9 (the cr123 version) all use the SAME head. you just change the body to the batterytype and amount you like to use. i like the lego aspect of it. also its alot cheaper than d10 (about 40-45$ if i recall right) its bigger too. fatter and longer. people with big hands and gloves like it better. and the knurling and shape of the light is more agressive than in d10. in jeans pocket the d10 is slimmer and nicer.. but when holding i like the itp. thats why the d10 is my edc. i keep forgetting its with me.
if you prefer to go on the cheap route on edc. 1aa akoray k106. cheapest programmable flashlight i know of.. 3 modes you can customize to your liking. bluish tint compared to d10 but still ok in my mind. double worth its asking price in my mind. other programmable lights start at 68$ if remember right..
i got mine a week or 2 ago and i try my hardest to find a place to it. its too nice to forget and not to use, but not as nice as the ones i have (the tint issue) so i guess to me it will be the backup and loaner light. (and the one i take when i am afraid of loosing the better ones.. like on boat or gone drinking :) )
and the akoray.. there are plenty of threads of it.. look around. and the cost. 22$

if you really want the d10 i would suggest waiting for 4sevens to get their stock in.
they offer great guarantee for the lights they sell.
*also i had some serious difficulties in addin my sample of the optional pocket clip. some of them just dont fit right.*

I use the nitecore extreme as my EDC. It's a tad bit more than $70 but with coupon codes you can probably get close!! It does use the cr123 battery but they really are readily available. I am very pleased with it!!!:thumbsup:

You are thinking of the EZAA, not the D10. And those were global, not just 47's.
Actually I noticed that on 4sevens.com they were out of the D10 R2 and gave them a call. They told me there was a problem with the whole batch they had and they were sending them back and getting a new batch in a couple weeks. Even if there was another place to buy from i'd be concerned that there D10 R2's had the same issue. Guess i'll have to wait a few weeks. Sucks!

That is a bit disturbing. Nitecore seem to be having more than their fair share of QC problems recently.
The announcement on 4Sevens mentions the EX10 as well. Anyone know what the problem was ?

They didn't tell me what the actual problem was. I thought they said something about a part that was bad on all of them. Where are the Nitecore's made? The whole "High Quality Flashlight" thing is alittle disturbing too. Usually you only see that label put on a really cheap product. However, there are plenty of folks referencing that the D10 is great so I want to try one.

I can understand your apprehension about buying a previously recalled product, and I share your suspicion of their "high quality" branding on the box. I will say that the lights are manufactured in China, but that fact on its own shouldn't dissuade you. What I can say is that I've EDCed my D10 R2 for the past few weeks, and haven't babied it one bit. So far, I'm impressed. The build quality is above par, and its performance has impressed me.
If I were in the market right now, the recall situation would put me off a bit, but the fact that they're being proactive in doing that recall shows that the companies involved (manufacturer and distributor)aren't willing to release an inferior product to the public. Jeez, I sound like a salesman! :o
All in all, I don't think you can go wrong with a Nitecore, but the same can be said of a lot of companies out there. My advice is, if you're unsure about one flashlight or company, then look around at some of the other suggestions made in this thread. Whatever you choose, odds are you won't be disappointed! :thumbsup: Good luck!

While you're waiting for the D10 R2 to come back into stock, maybe pick up a ITC. I liked the C7 so well I just got the C8 and C9 bodies to go with it, and that C8 is one good looking, good feeling light. Min mode is perfect for going to bed or a quick trip at night to the kitchen.
That said, I do keep eyeballing the D10. Someday... :twothumbs

I've also been very happy with my Fenix PD30. I typically have mine with me all of the time. Sometimes it serves as a backup to my Surefires, while other times it serves as my primary light.
It meets all of your criteria except AA cell size. The PD30 is designed for CR123A batteries. I run mine on 2x 17340 LiFePO4 3.2V rechargeable cells. My rechargeable batteries have quickly paid for themselves, and the LiFePO4 chemistry seems to be the safest of the lithium ion rechargeables.

Yeah the D10 certainly has a cool factor going for it. I have two needs for a good flashlight. An EDC during hunting season that will fit into jean pockets and is bright and reliable(it is dark in the country) and a bigger hunting light that will fit into bigger hunting clothes pockets for getting in/out of the woods and tracking game. The think the D10 and the TK20 will be great....although i saw a new fenix yesterday the T something 20 designed specifically for hunting. I'm going to wait on reviews of it before i buy. Hunting season is still 5-6 months away for us so no real rush...although i could be using the D10 now...but i can wait i guess.
