low current 5V to 12V [CCFL]

I bought a pair of CCFL 12" lamps online with an enclosed inverter,
the inverter requires 12V 5ma

the well known LM2577 will pump out 3A, which was way beyond my needs. Does Anyone know of any small step-up ICs that has an output current of less than 50ma?

I want to power this off USB:nana:

its quite alright, there's a vast array of portable power packs designed for USB products floating about, instead of charging the occasional ipod a portable reading light would be nice:thumbsup:
 
The 555 timer IC with voltage booster array (diodes and capacitors) on the output would work.
 
I don't have a circuit designed/tested, but you could try a MAX232
(5v version, not the 3.3v MAX3232) which generates +/-10v at low
current. Under load up to ~10mA the voltage across the + and - pins
of the charge-pump outputs should be suitable to follow with a 78L12
regulator. This will only work if the -ve side of the CCFL can be isolated
from the USB ground.

It would be cheap, using common components, and no inductors.

Hi Illum! The specifications you gave for your lamp sounded suspicious, and sure enough there is a fly in the ointment. The PDF spec sheet, linked on the Jameco page, spills the beans. Yes, the input of the inverter module that powers the lamp is 12 volt, but it is the lamp itself, at 640 volts, that draws 5ma. That means the lamp uses 3.2 watts. IF the inverter was 100% efficient, your 12 volt supply would be drawing 266 milliamps! The inverter will not be 100% efficient, so my guess is at least 300ma. A USB port supply is usually limited to 500ma (2.5 watts), which won't be enough to 'pump up' to 12 volts at 300ma. It is a neat little package, though. Reminds me of the backlight tubes in every LCD flat panel monitor I ever took apart. Cheers, Jeff O.

according to my catalog [pdf version of the page here], it states clearly as such [emphasis in bold]
This kit is a dual CCFL that comes with an inverting power supply (12VDC @ 5ma input; 620V output), wire harness and connectors for easy setup
I knew it sounded fishy, but that's what it was written and I accepted it as such. oh well, my 5V power pack can yield up to 700ma so that's not an issue

In that case I'll run it from 12V then
