Today, I successfully swapped out the lame Q3 low dome emitter on an old MadMax sandwich with a Cree XR-E. What to put it in?

I've been carrying an Inova X1 for a couple years, modified to accept a standard sandwich. I recently upgraded it to a cut down McR20 reflector and a sammie I built with a UX1K emitter. It was an excellent light running off either a Energizer lithium or a NimH AA battery. I decided to stick the Cree sandwich in it, which necessitated a change to a cut down McR19 reflector. Man, this thing is *way* brighter than the old U bin setup, and the beam is very good with the miniaturized McR19. It also kicks butt on the Jetbeam on high.......

I won't bore you with an outline of the machine work involved. Here is what it looks like compared to a Jetbeam AA........

beamshots please. I've been thinking about the same mod because I've done one with the Cree UV in an X1 before, but with the optics instead of reflector. I wanted to make one with a reflector like yours. Nice job!

Looks very neat Dan c.
How did you get the front off the X1?

I grab the bezel with a 5C collet in my lathe, and work it free. Takes all of a minute and leaves no marks. This does *not* work with the X5 however...and my X1's are a couple or three years old. The new reflectored ones might be different, but the old ones are simply pressed in with an interference fit.

Very nice mod. I still like the X1 too. I use the new one as an around the house light. I think the new one's bezel comes off the same as the old one - based on some mod threads when the new one came out.
