Re: SST-50 EDC Light 2nd Run *Closed*

Beamshots are only part of the story; there's also the UI, the fit-and-finish, the runtime, the tilt factor (i.e. personal bias), etc etc etc. Not that I have any reason to doubt the quality of this light, I just want to read someone else's detailed analysis of it.

If you read the first thread you would have saw

" Beautiful machining and workmanship. Low is nice and high is BRIGHT! "

"Got my light in today!! WOW!! Very Nice Job"

"All I can say is outstanding!"

"This is my first time owning one of your creations and all I can is that the light is absolutely awesome!!!"

"Build like a tank, the grip is awesome, the finish is the best bare alum
i haver ever hold in my hands! I am really impressed!"

"Fit and finish is EXCELLENT"

"This is an amazing looking light, the clip is top notch. Then you turn it on and just WOW!"

"Fit and finish are absolutely magnificent. I am definetly going to order a titanium version in the next run"

As for runtime......this is what I use.

I hope this helps.

I can upgrade the existing lights but if your expecting to get double the brightness you will be disappointed. The SST-50 seems pretty efficient at around 1.2amps. The 2800mah lights are definitely brighter, but by eye I would say only around 25%.

Mac

Actually, according to the data sheet, there is a 50% flux increase between 1.75A and 2.8A.

Of course, optimal for us would be 5A or even more, but there are some heat management issues involved.

To put the chart in lumens context, a WJ bin emitter puts out 500-600 lumens at 1.75A. That's the 100% line.

Yeah I understand, it would be foolish of me to expect that. Its more of the fact that I wanted a three level light and I hate the strobe and SOS and when you first offered them there was only a 2 mode and the 5 mode. PM an upgrade price when you get a chance

Thanks

Mac,

Looks like everyone knows better and if it's not too late yet I'd like to change from the 5 mode driver to the 3mode Low-Med-2800mah High. Thanks!

are you numbering, inscribing the lights?
it would be kinda cool to know what # we're getting.

just throwing that idea out there.

Re: SST-50 EDC Light 2nd Run *Closed*

Has anyone done a writeup of this yet? I know the prototype thread was well-populated, but there's nothing like reading a review written by someone who doesn't already know what to expect from their purchase. Always interesting to see what features unexpectedly catch people's eyes.

I will buy from Mac sight unseen anyday, no questions asked.:D
Problem is Mac's creations never lasts long enough for me to catch all if them. For example, this run if I was 7 minutes late then I'd have missed it again just like I missed the first run.

I guess we were lucky that some potential buyers didn't understand the system, which wasn't explained however.

When I saw the thread, I posted immediately, but wasn't sure if there already were 20 in or not, 11 stood in the list. I read all the postings between Mac's last one and mine, came up to 17 and send paypal. A little later, when someone posted it was too late, I took a sheet of paper and wrote each name down which wasn't on the list and which clearly said "I'll take one". That brought me to 21 AFAIR and I was afraid of being refunded.

As I'm in and not on the last place, it is not only about saying that you are in, but to send paypal too. So, I was very lucky, as I too wanted to wait for an OK to paypal in the beginning. You have to risk something to win...

Anyone that posted that they where in and didn't send paypal which I believe is only 3 people can still send payment and be on this run. I was waiting for this to come up from one of them :)

Yes, would have been normal to come from one of them, but I had a bad conscience thinking I took somebody elses' light away... :duck:

I really don't understand why so many folks are going for the 2.8A drive. Its only 25% or so brighter to the eye, significantly reduces runtime, and is not that useable due to the short runtime.

So the useable high on the 2.8A version is really only the medium setting. That means when you compare the useable high outputs between the 2.8 and the 1.4, the 1.4 is actually brighter. Anyway, that's how I see it.

Re: SST-50 EDC Light 2nd Run *Closed*

I missed out on the first run - wasn't good timing for me & I REALLY wanted a clip - which came later in the first run. I was going to send PP in the evening - but when i saw how fast they were going I ended up sending PP from work.

Looks like a great light - and looking forward to my first creation from Mac. The clip (which I use for stringing a lanyard around the light and back out through the clip) is Fantastic!

Re: SST-50 EDC Light 2nd Run *Closed*

I have not bought any of the RCR123 cells yet, and got one of the Mac's SST-50 first run 5 mode from Zoran today. Do you guys recommend AW's protected RCR123 for these, as it looks like Mac's demo photo's are perhaps a generic unprotected version with higher mAh rating? Craftsmanship is great as always...but I only have weenie 123A cells around.

Re: SST-50 EDC Light 2nd Run *Closed*

The RCR123 is just fine for it. You could run an IMR, but you'd give up a little runtime.

Right, but not asking about IMR for the 5 mode driver, rather wondering which RCR since it appears Mac demo's perhaps a higher mAh cell than AW's RCR.

Re: SST-50 EDC Light 2nd Run *Closed*

There is no better quality RCR123 than AW's. I have about 4 dozen of them, and have never had one fail.
