Good ol' bic, they're simple and get the job done.

Unfortunately, my geeky fascination for tech wouldn't allow me to settle on a boring old bic lighter and my googling led me to this forum. I decided to have a little fun and excitement and I got a Blazer CG-001 for my dad for his birthday and a Blazer Little Buddy for me. We live in Vermont and I thought it would be neat to have something a bit more interesting to light our fireplaces with.

What sold me on the Blazer lighters were people's general positive remarks on their reliability. These lighters have a ceramic shroud to contain the powerful jet flame and help keep them nice and cool. I also watched a lot of youtube video's and the Blazer's torch seemed to burn nice and strong compared to other lighters, maybe it's because they burn at 2500F. They also look pretty well built to me and hold lots of fluid. However, I used to smoke when I was 15 until I was 20 years old and used a lot of lighters. So, I know what it's like to have a fancy lighter only to have it break on you after a while. Therefore, I decided to do a little research this time.

What I found is, first, the Blazers use a peizo ignition system. According to Wiki, these lighters aren't designed to operate reliably over 8000ft above sea level. Just something to think about for you torch lighter fans. Also, it's important to properly refill your lighter with quality butane fluid. This guy has a nice little video showing how it's done properly. Of course, I still don't have the lighters, yet, as they're coming though the mail at this moment, but I'm optimistic they'll work out. That's about it. I wasn't expecting my post to be so long.:D

Anyway, I enjoy reading these forums and guess what, I ended up with more than I bargained for by buying a flashlight. A Maratac AAA keychain light to be exact.

Thank you for that youtube link!

I got two lighters FULL of butane by following those instructions!

I mostly use the butanes to to burn the ends of paracord. But one of mine lights candles pretty well too.

I saw a jetflame lighter that used normal electronic bics or cricket lighters as insert. I think this is the best of both ways because, but can't find one? Anyone knows where to find one?

Here's some of my old and one new favorite from my semi-collection.

From L to R

1. This big boy belonged to my father and is at least 50 yrs. old. It's aluminum with the bottom half being a reservoir for fuel that's separate from the wadding and flint tube in the top part. It's marked: Trailyter Commodities Corp. Cleveland, O.

2. This little guy was my mother's and is also at least 50 yrs. old. It has the Zenith name on the side. On the bottom it says: Type-D Made by K.K.S. Made in Occupied Japan

3. Scripto Vu-Lighter purchased by me in 1969.

4. Peanut lighter that's a couple weeks old from County Comm.

Mini Bic.

Small, compact, thin, and weigh practically nothing! Oh yeah, cheap & reliable.

Maybe there are other items that are both cheap & reliable out there in the world. But I can't think of them right now.

Picked up my latest one for $1 at a gas-station mini-mart. Like their bigger brothers, you can toss one in an emergency kit; and literally years later you know it'll still light. Sadly, can't say the same about my Zippo or my Peanut Lighter from County Comm.

I've got a 1961 Zippo. First owner was a Submarine Captain! So I'm pretty sure this one has been underwater many times :)
Also got a 2001 heineken Zippo, and a rippo (fake one)
I used to carry the 1961, but I traded it in for a EDC flashlight. It's a bit more useful, because I don't smoke :p

I got a couple lighters depending on mood/occasion and whatnot.

First of all is of course the trusty little bic mini, no pics needed. I also swap between these from time to time;

img6100small.jpg

Zippo for in jeans, pb207 for tinkering in and around the house and lighting cigars and dupont for when going all suity.....

No oil insert for the zippo, it evaporates too darn fast..

But i do love a simple oil/flint lighter so for that i have an Imco 6700! Not my pic but just so you know what lighter it is (everybody has probably seen one of these)

Love em all equally for all their differences

Well I'm a non smoker, but a Zippo collector. I have 232 of em in my collection, and carry one every day.
However, for overall cigar lighting and work/home tasks, my go-to is a Blazer PB-207

While messing around on the web, this thread came up. Only after posting I realized it was a 4 year old thread!

But yeah? no new lighters out there? We can't fire this thread back up?

I don't smoke buy carry a lighter everyday. It changes ask the time depending what I feel like and what I'm wearing.

It would be interesting to see what else other people carry other than a BIC lighter

BIC will always be the best for me.
Cheap, durable, and easy to use.

People have found bics in the mud on hiking trips, and after being cleaned and dried, it would still produce a flame.

I have an usb lighter that works pretty well, but not nearly as convenient as a BIC.

Zippos (when I used to smoke) would taste bad and the smell of fluid gave me migraines. Love playing with the actual lighter case though.

Red Bic.
I've heard very bad advice from otherwise reputable "survival experts" to go with the cheap, clear lighters instead, "because you can see how much butane is left".
First of all with a Bic, or D'Jeep, or Cricket, you don't need to worry about how much butane is left because they don't leak, and with a little bit of careful back lighting, including sunlight, you can see just fine how much butane is left.
Most importantly, they don't leak, and they don't need adjustment dials to function.
If it's freezing cold and they won't light, rub them between your hands for 15 seconds or so, the friction will heat the butane above its vaporization temp.
They just reliably produce fire.
As a smoker, not proud of it, but as a smoker I can get ignition of a cigarette or tinder bundle with a <1/2 second flash of fire, a full size Bic is a challenge to hang onto long enough to wear out, a mini Bic is only a bit more likely to expire before being lost.
Getting a fire lighted with a Bic vs one of those high temp pocket brazing torches/crack lighters is more a matter of understanding the draft/air flow rather than any ultimate fire lighting reliability. The pocket brazing torches will let you ignite something with no clue about the air flow, but if you want to get a fire stated you need to understand that anyways, and I've got a lot more confidence in the ferocium sparker and wheel than I do in any resistance coil.
Like earlier posters have noted, I have personally sat in a nice spot that I'd sat in years before, and looked down to find a Bic that I'd misplaced a year or two before.
Taking the cover off, catching the freocium flint in my t shirt, and clearing the spring of any debris, maybe oiling it from my hair out the corner of my nose, then carefully reassembling, it's a reliable lighter.
I only buy red Bics, and in the process of training myself to not let them walk off, I discovered that I too was a habitual lighter thief... it's human nature to put the fire maker in your pocket after all.
I cured them both at the same time, I only carry red Bics.

I'm still going with mini Bic or full-sized Bic as well.

For those concerned with fuel level inside the lighter, get a white bodied Bic. Shine your light at it from the side. Now you can see how much fuel is left inside.

Brunton Armored Lighter with History

Really ENJOY some of those lighter options people. :D

I preferred to allow for a number of posts before I sullied the tread with some of my own lighter devices. :sssh:

That said and since a few years have transpired, time to post a few of my own preferences.

First off is the butane stoked Brunton Armored Lighter as used below.

Re: Brunton Armored Lighter with History

My two favorite lighters are Zippo, usually with a thunderbird butane insert, or a Clipper. The thunderbird inserts do not evaporate like the regular Zippo and can have a soft flame or torch depending on the insert you purchase. In many ways the Clipper is on par with a Bic but refillable and they even have a smaller micro which is about the size of a Bic mini but round and still refillable.
