The best UI of all time is NO UI !!!

The rotary brightness adjustment is the most ingenious and effortlessly intuitive method of flashlight control I've ever experienced. Instant one-handed infinitely variable control with zero learning curve.

The venerable RRT01 employs it beautifully with the control ring on the light's "neck" for perfectly natural finger adjustment. It's an absolute joy in real world use and great for an EDC. Also tied for world champion most easily dialed in sub sub lumen extreme low output which is phenomenal for fully dark adapted vision, where very little output goes a surprisingly long way. Like waking up middle of the night and really dark places.

For many years I have wish listed an HDS rotary but it has been a bit beyond financial reach and used ones sell out in milliseconds. I had several of the old school HDS (Ultimate 60 XR GT) way back when and absolutely loved them. So the Rotary should be a Grail Light for me except for one stickler issue: I'm a huge pocket clip carry guy and apparently there's no good solution for the Rotary even though HDS offers the (silly expensive $60) Universal Clip which users here tend to condemn, though I've never seen pictures. Anyone that can advise me on this your suggestions are appreciated.

So as a much more affordable rotary control experience the RRT01 is just magic. I obtained mine from US based Batteryjunction.com. Also for Christmas obtained a Vinh Skylumen version with a 5000K SFT40 which I am over the moon(light) happy with.

However, Jon didn't mention the best kept secret in rotary (twisty) control (which shouldn't be a secret) the exquisitely crafted FrazLabs QT Nugget series of lights. I recently acquired stainless steel and aluminum versions of their 18650 sized QT Nugget and they are unlike any other I own and became instant favorites. The tie for world champion sub lumen performance. I can't stress enough how wonderfully simple the "twist for brighter or dimmer" method is when using the light in everyday conditions. It's a mystery to me why this method is not used in more light designs, it's a fantastic pure analog feel. No flashlight enthusiast should be without a FrazLabs model.

Finally just a mention of the only other rotary brightness control light I know of: the legacy (discontinued but still around,) Nitecore SRT7GT and its current production successor SRT7i (with SFT70). The older model with a brightness ring around the "neck" and the current model with a rotary knob on its tailswitch.

Last but not least an appeal for anyone willing to sell me my Grail: an HDS Rotary with 219B SW45K... please pm me.

Happy New Year CPF !!!

(and Cheers for Jon Slider, you're the best!)
You forgot about the sunwayman v11r(I think)

have not tried a QTC light, glad to hear youre enjoying yours
and thanks for your very kind words.. means a lot to me

HDS Rotary with 219B SW45K
a grail for me also, I waited about 5 years to allow myself to get one..

I tried using bezel up carry (with a couple of different clip options), but ended up taking the clip back off..
I would recommend the clip on the left, (if using a clip, but the HDS just feels so much better in hand w no clip..):

more HDS eyecandy in this album

and my pimped V10r, also sw45k:

Very last day of 2023.... Thrunite BSS V5 in Black.

Ironically, not for that silly bezel. I liked the fact that it comes with a very useful, screw-on, red lens filter. But I suppose it's "back scratcher" feature could come in handy. 😉

1 purchase this year. I needed a headlamp, because zebras don't suit me - in the cold they think the battery is low and reduce the brightness to almost a minimum. I went to a hardware store and looked at lanterns ranging from 1.4 to 10.5 dollars. Progress is unstoppable, cheap flashlights have finally appeared that can be turned on/off at the wave of a hand using a sensor, they have started installing 3535 diodes instead of Seoul SSC P4 clones or something like that. I mean these guys named 1W, 3W and 5W
1704267076662.png

In the end, I chose a flashlight for $5.7. What's good here - IP54. The back cover has a groove with a silicone round gasket; when it is closed, a counter protrusion presses the gasket on top. It looks something like this
1704267482136.png

The same is done in Pelican suitcases. But due to casting inaccuracies and inconsistent gasket thickness, there will most likely be a leak in some place when immersed

1704267630445.png

The button is part of a cast housing and works like a plastic spring; there will be no leaks here. Most likely, if you keep it in the sun, over time the plastic will become brittle and it will come off and there will be a hole at the top. From inside she presses the tact switch
1704267839485.png

The front glass is made of thick plastic, on the inside there is a wide silicone gasket into which the reflector rests
1704268006376.png

1704268026172.png

The diode is very similar to Osram Oslon by wire location, but on Osram's website there is no phosphor coating like CREE. I can't identify it, perhaps some unique Chinese development. The shade has a CRI of about 80, but pleasant, about 4000K
1704268789034.png

The reflector is clearly suitable for larger and taller diodes, since this diode sits deeper than the lower section of the reflector and only the outer part of the reflector is used. However, the beam has excellent light distribution. Very similar in shape to the beam of Ledil Boom, which is used in Prometheus Alpha. Maybe a little bit already hotspot. He seems to have the same hue shift problem as XP-G3, due to it there are small blue and yellow concentric stripes
1704269312370.png

Everything inside is on self-tapping screws with a + head. It can be disassembled and assembled easily and reliably. Here's all the filling
1704269684351.png

This is controlled by CX3860B. Modes 3 - 100%, 30%, off. In 30% mode there is a noticeable PWM, but it is no more than Malkoff with 3 mode MDC heads. There is no mode memory, 100% turns on first, to turn it off you need to go through 30% mode
1704269857118.png

1704269874676.jpeg

In 100% mode, the brightness immediately begins to drop and the graph repeats the battery discharge graph. At 30% mode, the brightness stayed on the same line. But I didn't draw a graph for more than 30 minutes because I'm lazy. Most likely it is still constant due to the low current + PWM; as the batteries discharge, it should also drop. The current was not measured. Claimed operating time is 12 hours on alkaline 3*AAA in 30% mode

The flashlight has a personal number, production date and 3 years warranty
1704269460919.png

The tilt adjustment has 4 positions, between which there are ~15 degrees, a total of 45 degrees. The fixation is quite rigid if you don't jump or run
1704269614068.png

There are recesses in the front so you can see on a flat surface whether it's on or not
1704269769627.png

It goes very well with the screwdriver my friend gave me for New Years
1704270097298.png

I decided to end the warranty and installed Luminus SST-20 with a shaved dome
1704270209067.png

1704270290230.png

Hotspot has become narrower, but this is nothing compared to the improvement of CRI. White remains white, and the feathers are the same brown and green as in the light of the sun, which I cannot see now
1704270921337.png

1704270783107.png

For working at arm's length this is quite a pleasant beam
1704271069819.png

I still have 2 diodes from the same batch. When I order Spy 005, I will put exactly this LED there

Today I'll go and buy a couple more of these lanterns for my friends plumbers, I think they'll like it. And also install a 219B 5000K with a dome there

I am anxiously awaiting a Malkoff MDC HA 2AA Flashlight. Shipped, supposed to be delivered Friday. After being more than satisfied with my current lights for years, I decided it was time to upgrade a few. I am a fan of smaller lights and stick with AA and AAA lights that run on eneloops. It occured to me I did not have any 2X AA lights at all, I wanted the first one to be a good one.

Surefire G2X Pro (600 Lumen model).

I was browsing here on CPF one day and stumbled upon some older threads on this light. After reading various threads, I ended up wanting one.

After a quick Google search, an auction listing showed up, and, well.. *yadda yadda yadda*

I love it! :)

What:
Recently ordered an Emisar Noctigon K9.3 and Emisar DT8K (just got the shipping notification).

Why:
Been wanting something new and...special for awhile now. Just switched from the 26650 cell to the 21700, and I "needed" some more 21700 lights.
So these ones is mostly for fun - and I realize I have just dived into the rabbit hole that is custom lights...

And I keep reading about "Hank lights" here, so I googled it...and rather instantly fell in love with auxiliary lights (never seen that before), and spent the next week - while waiting for the paycheck - to read up on all the new emitters that's been released since I last was into it.

What I got: One Convoy S21E MAO.

Why: Two reasons.
One, I realized I don't have a side switch light that I can say I like, only a few Olights with their hideous low CRI cool white LEDs.
Two, I just like MAO lights. The white oxidised coating looks snazzy when new, and with use it develops a handsome rough patina that says to onlookers "this object was not babied, and it didn't have to be, it's a tough mutha".

A sofirn and the reason why is it was to far to go and shoplift it
Plus, most of their models are so cheap; why bother?
Just watch out for one dirty trick on the Sofirn official website.
Made a video about it on my YouTube channel awhile back.
Whatever model you want, check that "Sofirn" is printed next to it.
If it is, real Sofirn model. If not. Just a model designation only....
That's a piece of No-name cheap junk that Sofirn sells on their site.
No clue why they do that disgusting B.S.

I just purchased a FrazLabs QT-SS. I hope to see it soon! I think the QTC construction is intriguing as is the rotary interface. I've always wanted rotary but HDS isn't in my present budget (but it will happen someday!!!). I love the look of this light and from what I have read, it has some heft and is nearly indestructible. I'm waiting for it with all the patience I can muster.

Scott,

Congrats on your purchase. I bought one (QT-L SS) last month, it was my first. We are like minded, the HDS Rotary is just out of reach and I love the simple twisty rotary brightness idea. The lack of circuitry to fail (i love direct drive!) and ability to swap out emitters without soldering was really appealing to me as well.

The magic is this completely original and unique design is custom made and hand assembled by a husband and wife team completely dedicated to realizing their dream.

The result is nothing less than astonishing. I tried to get one for two years and they were always selling out their production runs immediately. My wish was finally granted and something incredible happened. In all my years of chasing after custom lights it is a wonderful and rare thing when you get a light you've dreamed of and it winds up exceeding your expectations.

I can say with all certainty that my QT-L SS has put more smiles on my face than anything I've bought in years. The stainless steel is drop dead gorgeous and has just the right amount of serious heft in the hand. The rotary control is as joyful as operating one of those oversized analog volume controls of the stereo components of yesteryear. It just feels absolutely right.

Nothing else compares to FrazLabs. Added to it that they are attainably priced and Felicia is wonderful about answering questions and customer service. In less than two weeks your wooden mystery puzzle box will arrive and I just know you're going to love it.

Cheers!

Last two:
1) Fenix HL15 Headlamp.
Sadly, not a very popular small 2AAA headlamp. Found out just today that it's discontinued. Snagged one of the very last ones on Brightguy.com for just under $20.oo (Usually it's right around $37.oo). At that price, no color option. You take the purple or you take nothing! I can live with that. This one is replacing the small, red, Princeton Tec headlamp that is part of an emergency lighting kit in the trunk of my car for the last several years. Hardcase box labeled Fenix. Older Fenix PD36 Tac. model inside. Along with Fenix red traffic-cone wand, Fenix diffuser, and set of Fenix Red, blue, green friction fit colored lenses. Two CR123 batteries outside the light. Two AAA batteries outside the headlamp. (Batts. all wrapped up in plastic.) Yeah, the P.T. was kinda out of place. Works great! But still replaced it with the Fenix HL15. Now everything in the kit is Fenix. (Except the batts.)

2) Brinyte PT28 Oathkeeper.
Really just wanted to own one. But ironically, as my very last flashlight purchase in 2024, it goes very well with my very last knife purchase of 2024.... A Gerber Pledge folding knife in Urban Blue. Oathkeeper and Pledge. Just very fitting. (Got the Oathkeeper on sale too, for 16% off.)

Sounds like we are on the same page! That SS looks indestructible and I can't wait to get my hands on it. You've confirmed my hopes for this light. Thanks so much for the write-up. At their prices, I suspect I'll be in the market for another one soon. I could of course just save for a HDS for EDC. I don't see myself always carrying the QT-SS. I love hearing what a smooth device this is. Thanks so much!!

Scott, immediately after my QT-SS purchase I ordered an aluminum version specifically for EDC. Which proved to be an ideal solution. The serious heft of the SS is completely replaced by this incredibly light, very practical to carry light with the exact same ideal fit in my hand. The aluminum is an even more impressive value at $125. Very well spent. The same anvil like durability with exquisite clean machining and finish.

The HDS Rotary has been my unattainable Grail for years. I am dead set on the NB45 Nichia 219B version but somewhat regret the 16340 size battery limitation. I wish it was 18350 for 70% more runtime keeping that great form factor. The 18650 body option seems too long and an extra $250 for it to have both is not an option. I've wanted to buy secondhand but each time a Rotary goes for sale it's gone in milliseconds.

Since I really appreciate runtime, that's one of the most outstanding features of using the FrazLabs. The QT-L 18650 has what seems like FOR-EV-ER runtime because you just dial in what you need in the moment and easily turn it down afterwards making really efficient use of the battery.

Add to that nothing I've ever seen has easier low level adjustability with incredibly low sub sub lumen capability. An absolute joy as a bedside nightlight and stellar middle of the night bathroom runs with fully dark adapted vision, when 0.05 lumen hits the spot.

The hardest part is now patiently waiting by the mailbox but you will soon be rewarded by your mystery puzzle box and its contents. I'm really happy for you!

Cheers!
