    Question about infrared lasers...

A long time ago I worked on an EDFA (erbium doped fiber amplifier). It used 980 nm laser as a pump to amplify signals at 1550 nm.

Infrared power LEDs for night-vision recording

I'm investigating infrared power LEDs for a friend who records bats at night (flying in or out of their roost in a tree for example). Currently he uses a home-built array of 5 mm IR leds to illuminate the bats. I wonder if I can help him create a better IR light. I noticed that KD and DX now...

    Regulation not as important?

I find it kind of funny that some people want it both ways: they expect the brightness to stay the same as battery voltage drops (i.e. regulation), but also expect the light to get brighter as they increase the voltage by using different kinds of batteries.

Hidden "TURBO" mode in the Deal Extreme MTE 1xAA SSCP4 42180-U

In my case, it appears that there is indeed glue in the threads on the head. I forced it open, but may have damaged the threads a bit. I suspect that the switch retaining ring is also glued, since it won't come off easily. Mine has the copper ring between the body and the head (this should also...

Q RE: Incan vs LED as personal searchlight

I'm not doubting your observations. I think there's more than just one reason why incandescents behave differently from LEDs and I don't like jumping to conclusions to pin it all on one specific phenomenon. I'd like to see a discussion about how strong the various effects really are (and if they...

Q RE: Incan vs LED as personal searchlight

I'm not doubting that the wavelength dependent reflection effect exists, but I doubt if it has significant effect with flashlights. The important parameter is the particle size to wavelength ratio. The sky is blue because of scattering on air molecules (much smaller than the light wavelength)...

Q RE: Incan vs LED as personal searchlight

I don't believe the scatter theory without further supporting evidence. Clouds also scatter light and are perfectly white, not blue. From a theoretical point of view, cloud/fog droplets are still much larger than the wavelength of light, so I think the effect cannot be fully attributed to simple...

    Need help wiring DX driver

Looking at the datasheet, I think you should connect the LED between pins 2 (bottom middle, Vout, positive) and 1 (bottom left, IFB, negative) of the 2106 IC. As far as I can see on the picture, the LED should be parallel to the yellow capacitor (left = negative, right = positive). The resistor...

    AMC7135 Circuit board @ Kaidomain

I think the 0.12V is only in the normal operating region, I believe the behaviour for Vin < Vout + 0.12V is unspecified.

AMC7315: What type of regulator is it?

I think you mean the AMC7135, right? It is indeed a linear current regulator.

$15 DX single stage AA - a winner

It is a boost circuit, but not strictly regulated as far as I can tell. The brightness drops off as the battery voltage gets lower. I think the brightness will stay relatively constant if you use a NiMH battery, because that type of battery has a fairly stable voltage under discharge intrinsically.

Hidden "TURBO" mode in the Deal Extreme MTE 1xAA SSCP4 42180-U

I noticed the "hidden turbo mode" too. I think the lower brightness in normal mode is caused by resistance in the switch or the spring. Mine gets quite hot too when running in hidden turbo mode. I tried to estimate the difference by taking two pictures (at exactly the same camera settings), one...

$15 DX single stage AA - a winner

I just received my MTE today and made some photos to compare it to my other LED lights (I'm not claiming this to be a fair comparison). Distance is about 1 meter from the wall. All lights are running on freshly charged NiMH of the same brand (except the SL PP 4AA lux, running on slightly used...

    LED Mafia and Incadescent Technology

Re: LED Mafia and IncaNdescent Technology Heh 4000 hrs... My LED lights probably won't last that long, because by that time something better has already come out!

    What's your favorite Luxeon-based flashlight?

I only have two luxeon lights: a civictor and a SL PP 4AA Lux but I like the PP most.
