It was a day like any other day. Watching a load of concrete get extruded out the rear of a machine like Play-Doh in the shape of typical curb and gutter along side a typical road. Ordinarily a slow steady process. I grab the concrete ticket from the driver before testing the material. He says "man, the radio just said some idiot just flew an airplane into the side of some building in New York. He couldn't see that big @$$ building?" I'm thinking alrighty then, sucks to be that pilot". Not long after that the driver gets out of his truck and says "man, some other idiot just flew a plane into another building in New York, what's wrong with those people?" A few minutes later we got word the Pentagon had been hit by an airplane and maybe the White House.
At that point I'm thinkin' "those North Koreans are sure going to be sorry but holy crap we're at war in my lifetime". I had no idea until later that day who it was. By lunchtime some guy on a bicycle rode past selling US flag bandanas. I still have the one I bought from the guy. I called my kids and told them not to hate certain people after this.
I got home after dark and saw it on the news. I remember thinking "I should never say this out loud but those guys were f-in genious. They took down America with f-in box cutters". I did tell my best friend that later. He said "don't you dare say that out loud, not now." We talked about how the gubment was going to swoop in and crack down not knowing the Patriot Act would soon become law of the land but that's what we were talking about and how Americans would gladly accept it.
Democrats and Republicans were holding hands and singing in church on 9/12. On 9/16 they were right back to business as usual, stabbing each other in the back. I also remembered a story in the Bible of Moses climbing down from the mountain and seeing folks worshipping a golden cow. My thought was those guys with box cutters had melted Americas golden cow but nobody would see it that way. With the extreme loss of life it was easy to see why nobody would though. Afterall, 3000 people had been murdered in just a few minutes.
Until I met a fellow from that part of the world I never knew why some people hate the western culture so much. The fellow is very peaceful and loves America. Yet he was able to explain the mindset of a terrorist to where I understood it. He too was a victim of a ruthless religious group who had murdered members of his family because they had become (somewhat) successful in his homeland. They hated him despite his feeding the poor and helping the war widows in his village.
It's a strange deal. A lot has changed since 9/11. Some for the good. It doesn't seem like it was 22 years ago, yet in some ways it seems like it was longer ago than that. It was sureal looking at the sky and seeing no vapor trails from airplanes for a few days. I remember seeing one on an afternoon and thinking 'we've gone back to as normal as we ever will'.
